If it was F2P from tomorrow? if no why? and if yes… why?
Do I get compensation for the rest of my annual subscription? It runs out in February or March 2026
I would probably leave. Free to play often brings massive microtransactions and a predatory cash shop. The game would do everything it can to funnel people to make purchases from the cash shop. All game conveniences and the best looking gear would be from the shop. It’s irritating because I like to earn my rewards from playing the game.
What made you think WoW would become F2P soon?
I think it wont happen. Just look around. Which MMO is better than WoW? Is WoW losing money? I don’t think so.
What I feel is you would be gone from WoW before it happens.
This is why I expect the game would rapidly spiral downward.
Depends on how F2P it gets. SWTOR level F2P? Can I maintain a sub, like with SWTOR, to avoid F2P restrictions? Then yeah. But if not, I refuse to be nickled and dimed for basic QoL features, like SWTOR does.
Id be whining about it for sure…depends on how trashy it became whether Id keep playing or not.
This. I don’t mind the current shop because it’s cosmetics. Do I occasionally buy something from the shop? Yes. But I don’t need to do it. Free to play often makes people feel like they do need whatever is on the shop in order to play effectively.
That’s what I was thinking. If being subbed means nothing changes for me, like in SWTOR, then I would be fine with it.
If not? Then yeah I’m done. Not going to pay $5 to turn off my hat.
I mean, most F2P games these days don’t have a cash shop that’s any different from Blizzard’s current cash shop in WoW. More than that, they were literally charging $90 for a single mount last November, so I’m sorry to say but you’re already living that reality lol
Every game that went f2p deteriorated into a massive mess. I get that people can’t afford or would like to play a big name game without a fee but each game to have implemented a f2p basis has become not only a cash grab by the company but has garnered the worst player base. I cannot foresee myself playing any longer after. Having to buy things just to be able to play. Not doing that.
SW:TOR and D&D are great examples of the difference in cash shop mentality. I have to buy things in order to play on those two games to be able to play comfortably. The cash shop on WoW I only could buy if I wanted it but, in the end, don’t need. Things like inventory space, quests, etc SW and D&D force you to buy unless you want to be severely limited.
I think it would go on the Game Pass before it went F2P.
Well, nothing is really free to play. Someone has to pay the bills to keep the lights on in the computer center. So the question would be, what do we have to pay for?
No. Not Interested in having to pay for each update, having the best cosmetics/mounts gated behind a shop purchase, and nerfed xp because I’m not an active battle pass subscriber.
I dipped my toes in f2p MMO with Global Agenda. Fun looter shooter that was dragged down by awful f2p system.
They’re also the exception, not the standard.
I recognize that there are games that went F2P that ended up decreasing in quality, but the reality is that WoW is already doing what most F2P games do these days. If it went F2P, not much would be perceivable on your end except an expanded cash shop with more cosmetics. They already sell gold (which can be used to buy gear and virtually everything else in the game), there’s already overpriced cosmetics. So realistically, what’s separating WoW from a F2P model at this point?
And let’s be real here: It’s not like WoW is still this beacon of quality game development. The game is rife with bugs, and it seems like every patch at this point categorically breaks the game in almost every way. It suffers from major balance issues, and the content is nowhere near the quality it needs to be as a $50 box price game with a subscription atop that.
I don’t think WoW will ever go F2P because it prints money for Microsoft and Blizzard by sheer virtue of the subscription fee, but don’t let that fool you into thinking the amount of money we spend to play this game is keeping its integrity intact. It most certainly hasn’t lol
But…we already have this stuff.
Unless you mean pay to win stuff?
I consider the wow token to be predatory
This is utterly wrong. They are cesspools of exploitation.
That’s also wrong.
It’s just a business model. I prefer the subscription based model as my costs and the companies revenues are less variable. This should let the company more confidently invest in the game.
I would stop playing if the game became just a cash grab and p2w.
There are definitely other issues with WoW that I have, and still do, make me take a hiatus. WoW has not been as great as it once was…a long time ago, but it hasn’t hit that point where I would not be back from my “breaks.” Making it free to play though would be that line in the sand for me though.
