Would you get upset if

Someone called you a meta slave?

Context: You’re trying to get a group together for your high level keystone, (or arena team, rated battleground or anything that follows a “meta game”). A guildie, that you know is good, has good awareness, good numbers, utility, etc., tells you that he would like to do that because he needs it for score AND a chance at a titanforge ring that is really good for him.

You tell him that you’re looking for specific classes (more specific: Rdruid/PWarr/Rogue/DH) and that even though his class is ok, you’d still like to take those 4 specific classes.

Your guildie says “oh, you’re a meta slave then, that’s fine, maybe next time”

Would you get upset? Yes, no, why?

I’m actually interested in reading what you guys think.

Meta slave? Who the heck comes up with these terms these days?

This is why I hate guilds now. You don’t do what everyone else wants, suddenly you get insulted, then cliques form, exclusion happens more often, then the terminal guild drama from the diaper club explodes and it’s /Gquit or you get booted.

Kinda of the same as someone calling you fotm

I think all the outrage is over at the is the ok sign ok thread. You might try there.

To answer you question, no, but I grew up w/ the sticks and stones mantra.

No. I wouldn’t worry about someone who feels the need to call names (even though that is a silly one I have not heard) because they aren’t being invited to a group. It’s your group, and if you think your best chance at success is having certain classes, then that’s well within your rights. You are not obligated to bring someone along just because they want to be brought along.

This is your answer. It’s effectively the same thing as being a perpetual FOTM player who always makes new characters based on what is currently powerful. Some players dislike and criticize that.

Honestly, forming groups based on the meta won’t get you as far as bringing players who are good. My M+ team is far outside of the meta; disc priest + prot pal + moonkin, and we do better than many meta groups.

If you know they are a good player, be serious about why you are excluding them. Chances are, they can still do the content just fine if they play well. Meta only applies to they very tippy top of players. It probably isn’t actually improving your win rate that much in the middle.

Nevermind, I’ll just get banned if I say what’s on my mind.

Short answer: No.

I think this is the biggest thing. Im more of a “bring the player not the class” kind of guy, mostly because I’ve ran “off meta” 16s and 17s with success. I’ve played with Rdruids/Rogues/Warrs/DHs that completely suck and they’re just playing the class because its the most wanted. But I will take a good player on an underperforming class anyday.

Nah I wouldnt. I gave a lot of chances to spec outside of the meta to know im not a meta slaves all the times. Depend of the dungeons, affixes and my mood as well…

Not really no, Because I play mobas and generally follow the meta and the term Meta slave is way more common in those games than it is in an MMORPG.
So I’ve already been called one plenty of times

Probably Twitter. I blame Twitter for 95% of the stupidity being put out into the general public these days.

I got triggered as hell at the end of legion when ww monk became meta and people thought I was a meta slave. Like seriously I started playing WW only into Nighthold… Do you even realize how bad ww monk was back then in PVE? It was actually memed that fist of fury was a wet noodle attack. There is no salt here… :triumph:

No, I wouldn’t get upset. But I also wouldn’t turn down a good player, guildmate to boot, from joining my group just because he isn’t playing a certain class. Doesn’t sound very guildy really, but you do you.

It’s your key. Your call. That’s really all there is to it.

I mean… based on your story… you are.

This is really something you have to ask yourself. I personally despise “meta slaves”. There is always going to be a “best” option, but that doesn’t mean it’s even a noticeable difference between “the best” and the other options. It does tremendous damage to the game and community when meta slaves take over.

People watch videos or look at spreadsheet data and decide “well this is the best” and never bother with anything else. People start changing the way they play, the way they gear. People play specs they don’t enjoy because it’s “the best” even though its a percentage point or two difference and will have no bearing on the success of your own raids or instances.

It’s depressing.

No, he is just mad you told him no, so he is trying to guilt you into taking him even though it would be sub optimal. You are looking at a specific comp for a specific reason. If he wants to run it, he can form his own group.

I would never be in this position to be honest , id always take a guild mate over a random , even if he/she is playing the worst spec ever and they just started playing it that minute.
