Would you buy a used GPU off eBay?

My GPU died a few days ago. It is a nv gtx 1080 from 2016. Due to GPU shortages, I am considering replacing it with a used one from eBay. Completed auctions go for around $500. Crazy, I know.

I’ll often sell my older hardware on ebay and never had one issue as a buy or seller but I won’t buy from someone who has just a handful (or less) reviews.

If you are the first owner, you might be able to get a warranty replacement even if it’s past the warranty period. Worth asking anyway.

two weeks ago I was offered a RTX 2070 super (new) for $575. I passed since I wasn’t in a rush to upgrade (I still do 90FPS+ @ 1440p in WoW & SWTOR) and I can wait it out for the summer but I see the ebay prices and I’m like…damn it’s going for how much now?

The XFX RX 5700XT RAW II I got for $369 in December 2019 is going for over $900 on ebay right now lol

My Red Devil RX 5700 XT was like $430 at microcenter, now its like $1000-$1200 depending on seller

for the Sapphire nitro RX 5700 XT special edition: $450 at Microcenter, don’t know about the price on ebay because its mostly the non special editions, but I’d assume it be close to $1300+

I still have my xfx Vega 56 in a box, I probably could sell it for like $700

I see the reference v64s for about 800+…

Might consider selling mine as it’s mostly just idle.

But the other part of me wants to hold into it as a spare

With prices on used GPUs skyrocketing lately I’ve been thinking if maybe I should try to get something out of my lightly used EVGA 980Ti Classified. Not exactly cutting edge but more powerful than a lot of the stuff flying off the shelves right now.

On the other hand I feel like I should keep it as backup in case the 5700 XT goes belly up, because replacing that wouldn’t be fun right now…

Yep, exactly. If my 3080 goes flop, I will have a Vega 64 to hold me over until RMA happens. Which with supply issues, I don’t even know how long that is.

If I sell it…then I guess it’s back to RX 580. Which eh…

Yeah it’s the only reason I’m going to hold on to my wife’s 1080. It’s not great but our next option is a Radeon 380 ( 390? ) so yeah.
