If Blizz and Square Enix teamed up as competitors in good faith to exchange a raid or a dungeon or something like that for a temporary event, would you see it as a good move?
Nope. That would be a horrible business move and that’s why it will never happen.
Blizzard already gave FFXIV a ton of new players.
Ehh. Sure, why not?
Not with FF, no. Maybe ESO or Warhammer.
Why?
Just why?
Look, I’m all for crossover stuff, but if Blizzard is going to do any crossover, it should be between their own games, not their competitors. Give me a cross-over where the demons of sanctuary invade Azeroth. Make the HotS Nexus canon or something.
But no FF14 stuff. Thanks.
I don’t appreciate crossovers in general. They’re silly, and I like my stories to take themselves a little more seriously than that. Consistency is good, and even when lore is made up to support a crossover, it’s still obviously a crossover and I can’t get behind that.
I don’t even like the FFXIV x NieR crossover and they have similar styles and the same publisher.
The only thing keeping me away from FFXIV is the almost criminal lack of funny goblins. If they had funny little suicidal people I’d try that game in a heartbeat.
Tons of goblins, here.
Anyway, the lead developer of FFXIV would be all for cross-over event, but I don’t think the WarCraft universe lends itself well to having overt crossovers with different franchises. It has a very specific tone (or at least, it did) that would be diluted with such multiversal antics.
FFXIV shouldn’t lower itself to wows level.
I wouldn’t mind yeah, be interesting to see how that would work. But as a few others said, cross over with diablo would make more sense and fit well.
A crossover with anything is impossible with current WoW lore.
Ooh!! Devilish!
Wait, wait, wait. They have funny goblins!? Can I play as a funny goblin!? Please say yes.
Wouldn’t happen. Wow’s player base is far too tribalistic, far beyond what is considered “normal” for the average person.
If it ever happened there would be so much QQ on the forums you could convert it into pennies and build a space bridge to neptune and back.
Tell that to Monster Hunter. They had a cross over event with FF14 and it was a massive success in both games, and as far as pve content is concerned the two games are WoW’s biggest competitors.
Ragnaros showing up in FF while Ifrit shows up in WoW, I could be game for it.
It won’t happen though.
On that note, for a more realistic cross-over, I’d love to see WoW cross with Diablo as mentioned. We already got “The Cow Level” in WoW, and even though it was incredibly low-effort, even lower effort than the Hearthstone team’s event (which is insane by the way, can we take a moment to reflect upon the fact that a P2W card game team has more passion than the developers of the biggest MMO on the market), it was really fun to have that kind of cross-over, and ideally they go beyond that and do something more ambitious.
Many WoW weapons have crossed in Diablo 3. I think we should see the reverse. Imagine being able to transmog a Grandfather, Stormshield, Windforce, etc.
You underestimate Blizzards willingness to screw over the lore for the perceived Coolnessfactor.
No.
Why? For a couple of reasons.
The issue with IP ownwership would be an absolute nightmare.
FF14 has already done multiple crossovers and, to be frank, it had always come across as a cynical cash grab wrapped up in a comforting blanket of nostaligia and fan service.
Let the two games co-exist. Without interfering with one another directly.
Unfortunately not. For whatever reason, Square Enix is very anti-“beast” race. It’s just various varieties of humans. Even when they try to make something outside that “pretty human with X” mold, player feedback in the homeland has them dialing back their designs. We were supposed to get fiercely savage dragon people…
But we got this:
I tend to speak FFXIV’s praises for many things, but their lack of courage in implementing a diverse array of playable options is definitely a glaring issue. And I fear goblins are a casualty of that trend - they were, essentially, FFXI’s mascot race, to the point they were imported wholesale into FFXIV, but they weren’t brave enough to make them playable.
