Would the people of Westfall have something to say about…

…the renewed Black Dragonflight?

We all know the story of how Onyxia and her dragonkin manipulated the Stormwind nobles to deny payment to those who built Stormwind, who would then go on to become the Defias.

Onyxia would continue to pull the strings to deny aid to Westfall and Darkshire even as many threats and shortages threatened those people.

It seems unlikely that the Stormwind nobles will be held accountable for all this because Blizzard seems to prefer blaming the behind-the-scenes manipulators for things like this.

So, maybe Onyxia’s relatives might be interested in making amends instead?

Or would it be unreasonable to even associate the current black dragons with those exposed to the same old god corruption as Deathwing?

I think it would depend on a lot of factors:

  1. What is the renewed black dragonflight’s presence beyond the Dragon Isles?
  2. Do Westfalians know about the renewal of the black dragonflight?
  3. Is the black dragonflight going to act on the Aspect’s plans of ‘becoming the world’s guardians again’?
  4. If they do, will they re-adopt their flight’s charge of shaping the land to aid its inhabitants, and will that include work in places like Westfall?

Dragonflight seems to be focused on the flights regaining their power, so actions using that power probably won’t occur until later patches or expansions. I do think it would be pretty awesome for a new black dragonflight character/squad to canonically undo a lot of the Cataclysm-era map disruptions, like Westfall’s eternal storm or Ashenvale’s volcano.

That could even be the lore reason for a revamped old world next expansion!
(Okay, I doubt Blizz would do so, but a girl can dream.)

Given that the Alliance has historically teamed up with forces that had been trying to annihilate them just seconds ago, I don’t think they’d notice.

Considering we as the alliance murderhobos killed the people who were dissenting about it, I imagine nothing. The peoples of westfall have been successfully oppressed and will remain silent going forward, im sure.

Good news! Anyone who would have had issues with the return of the Black Dragonflight died of starvation in the wake of Stormwind’s economical collapse following the campaign against the Lich King.

That is a canonical thing that actually happened, but has never played a significant role what-so-ever despite being something that would be pretty damn compelling.

“Airships? And you built HOW MANY? Varian, the people can’t feed themselves!”

On the plus side, the population decimation allowed Stormwind to absorb those Night Elf and Gilneas refugees after the Tree burned down.

One of the comments guards say to Dracthyr is something like “I don’t trust dragons, not after that business with Lady Prestor”.

So yup! Ordinary people still have some hard feelings about dragons manipulating their politics, to say nothing of one torching the city that one time

And don’t forget, the Florida People Adventurers/Champions of Azeroth spent 2 years in the Shadowlands, and then another 3 years helping to rebuild their kingdoms.

After years of grinding, no-holds-barred, brutal conflicts that saw Dragons, Demons and Old Gods descending upon every settlement and outpost, entire generations wiped out in the space of a year of fighting or two, all kingdoms reduced to either burned out or economically gutted shells of their former selves, treachery, betrayal and greed tearing apart their systems of government from the inside and in the case of the Horde, two instances of civil war within a span of five years.

Anything that reeks of any part of that mess is going to get a massive stink-eye from the civilian population who lack the breadth and scope of the world that the Adventurers/Champions/Murder-Hobo population possesses. The Dracthyr may be innocent and naive to us, but to the citizens of the Horde and the Alliance? They’re yet a new terrifying addition to their lives, and just like the Draenei and the Sin’dorei, the Death Knights and the Demon Hunters, their inclusion heralds an era of terrible strife and danger once more to the common folk.

Honestly, I don’t think they would really care. Its been so many years and so much has happened, Westfall is (hopefully) in a more stable and reasonable state ICly now.

I think Westfall is in the lore hole tbh.

But if it’s not, I doubt the people there have the time or energy to care overmuch about dragons. For a few reasons:

#1: Westfall folks are not portrayed as the most educated and informed individuals. I sincerely doubt that most even realise Stormwind was manipulated by Onyxia.
#2: Westfall folks are more concerned with feeding and clothing themselves than world history and politics.
#3: For better or for worse, even post Onyxia (like in Cataclysm) many Westfall folks feel burned by the Kingdom of Stormwind, and their resentment has frequently led them to passive or active opposition. I think the majority of Westfall folks blame Stormwind for their problems and would likely be confused if Wrathion and Ebyssian came by.

Finally I also think that Eybssian is too Horde aligned, and Wrathion is too selfish to really care for the plight of the people of Westfall.

So in short, no. I think Westfall will go on much as it has this past age. With low public order and very little knowledge of the outside world.

Hard feelings towards the Black Dragonflight? Probably.

Hard feelings towards the Human Nobles who went along with it and still keep the people down over there because Nobility historically needs to go the way of the dodo? Almost Certainly.

Dragons don’t do a great job of building trust. They hide their true selves when walking among mortals and try to use their considerable power to shape events to their liking, which is often portrayed as the greater good. Their track record on upholding their duties is also spotty. It’s not inconceivable that just about anyone might have a problem with their return. If anyone should be gaining the power of the aspects, it’s us mortals who have bled and suffered for our own fates.

I’m inclined to agree with Sarestha that many people in Westfall probably aren’t aware that a dragon was involved in Stormwind’s decision not to pay the Westfallen workers, and also that even if they are, they probably blame Stormwind’s nobles just as much for the situation Westfall has ended up in. It’s often really hard to tell, though, how much of what we see as players is common knowledge. I’d like there to be a bit more flavor dialogue going around that gives hints about that.

Also, point of disagreement:

Absolutely no one who thought feeding souls to Xal’atath was a fine idea should be given the power of an aspect – and that’s only the bad mortal decision that comes to mind most quickly.

Can you imagine how quick we’d finish destroying ourselves if all or most or even just a lot of mortals could suddenly do all the things they’ve been doing, but now with the power of an aspect?

Mountain ranges abruptly shift back and forth as two Earth-Warder-infused mortals play tug-of-war with zone boundaries in an attempt to “even out the zone distribution imbalance” between factions (which both of them vastly exaggerate in favor of their own side)

You think that’s bad?

Imagine the population explosion courtesy of people infused with the power of the Red Flight Aspect?
