Would Smart Bosses Be Fun?

I don’t mean like SkyNet smart where Kil’Jaeden builds himself an Android body and takes over Blizz HQ, but have them fight more like players. Throw some interrupts and targeted CCs. Tunnel DHs (because DHs)…that sort of thing.

How would that work. Ai goes attacking the tank is stipid lets one shot the heslz thrn the dps. Oh lwts spam ccs.

Boss mechanics are them being smarter.

Yes, they would.

But it completely breaks the trinity/aggro foundation of the game.

Ai cannot be smart lol

Easy. Bosses ignores the tiny tank gnome and trains the healer = game over man

The fight would need to be tuned so that after the boss kills all the healers and DPS, the tanks could just solo it.

And then we’d have threads about “ARROGANT TANKS SOLOING RAID BOSSES WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF US”

That’s what they all say at the start of the robot apocalypse movie.

I mean…we had that sort of mechanics in one shape or another before. There are bosses that fixate on players or ignore threat/taunt and they have to be kites, some abilities will interrupt/silence spellcasting and having to dispell a cc is not the uncommon.

Iirc the last boss in Mists had actual movement prediction and it made the fight almost unplayably hard. Someone correct me if I’m wrong though.

Jaina sort of had a mechanic like this, where she ice blocks when heroism goes out.
I think it could be fun, if done right.

No, they tried it once with the arena in WOTLK. Raider HATED it, it felt like you were pvp’ing, not raiding. They tried it again via PVE bots in bgs special event, HATED.

They should make it where a player can be the boss. Can you imagine a souped up holy pally boss with 3 million HP?

Smart AI could in theory beat regular players due to their reaction times.

This was a thing in ToC Faction Champions.

Fun fight that gave a raid encounter a PvP feel, but no matter what AI mechanics you give an encounter you’ll have to provide the raid the counter abilities or it will be a miserable failure

Yea I was about to say I thought they did this with a party on party thing, not a single uber boss.

Imagine that on mythic. Subsecond cooldown response, instant group communication, millisecond reaction time. Just envision someone brezing the healer and, suddenly the entire enemy part start focusing them down…again.

Just trying to picture it. DH’s jumping, Warriors charging, Warlocks fearing the frost nova’d, mine controlled healer. All within 3s.

Fun times.

‘Island style AI’

They’d need to really work, refine the programing to deliver a proper AI boss fight.

I am not against it. Frankly I dislike this practice ad nauseam 'till the fight is beatable. Pros and cons but it’s an interesting idea I’m open to.

I love fights with mind control mechanics
Some mind control AIs are better than players :joy:

Well, you’ll notice that I don’t think there’s been a boss fight with an “wipe the healers” ability. There’s always been one shot abilities, but not so much focused on healer. Worst we get are those healing debuff “No healing for the next 30s” or whatever, but that’s far different from the boss doing a stomp or a shout that waylays all of the healers at once.

It factually can. In speedrunning, there’s something called Tasbot which basically plays games perfectly by itself after putting in inputs and timings…it can go beyond humans.

There’s also this Smashbot that shamed all pro smash players(Hint: AI>>>>>>>humans reaction speed):

The video I linked above does subsecond reactions perfectly, its scary how perfect AI can be.

I remember tok in SoO having his interrupt mechanic which was neat, but no recent ones come to mind

Actually miss the unforgiving interrupts of old wow dungeons

Bosses should disarm and lock out casters as well. Like imagine a boss that disarms a melee dps thats bursting and forces the dps to avoid or trinket the disarm or stagger their cds
