Would it be weird to add Epic Gems to Obsidian Shard vendor?

In OG cata I feel like the main source of the gems was from LFR and everyone running their alt armies through them. Since we don’t have LFR wouldn’t it make sense to add them to the vendor so they’re not 5k per?

Absolutely - I remember how common epic gems were in original Cata. I don’t know why they didn’t include them, since LFR kept them in stock.

No it didn’t. The currency needed to purchase the geodes that contain the gems only dropped on normal and heroic

Except that the currency to buy the geodes did not drop in LFR, so removing LFR had no effect on the available gem supply.

Supply and Demand. The price will go down when the demand goes down. Just like the price of rare red gems went down after the initial phase launch demand went away.

LFR didn’t add any epic gems to the pool.

I would just accept the fact reds are going to be pretty high for a long while for a few reasons…

  1. Its what a lot of people socket even if bonus isn’t used on the piece because primaries are generally better for a lot of specs.

  2. A lot of the sockets are just red anyway so anyone that doesn’t jive with the above is just using more reds anyways.

  3. How you get gems is just slower and more brain dead than ever in DS so… yeah…

  4. A precedence is being set so people will just in general jack them up higher. Yeah, they will go down with time like anything but it will be slower.

More ppl (and their alts) will be farming Spine/Madness as the “ICC-Nerf” stacks up too.

They got cheaper in OG cata because we farmed dragon soul for a year, that’s a lot of gems from people with bis that don’t need thrm

There was also about 70-80x more players in original Cataclysm to be fair too.

While true, the realms were also smaller in original Cataclysm. So they had less gems and less players then any other big realms we have now.

True but there are other factors as well. Like how you can get around 390ilvl without stepping foot into Dragon Soul. Raiding was the only content originally. Paired with the fact that we are a few months away from MoP and all of the heroic DS gear is quickly replaced by MoP quest greens and blues.

If this was original Cataclysm, we’d only have one version of WoW and everyone would only be raiding Dragon Soul. I think that’s a big factor as well. I don’t want to raid in retail, season of discovery and run dragon soul every week when I can gear my alts with heroic+ and chill.

The main source of epic gems in OG Cata was the honor point vender. You could buy epic gems for like 800 honor points. I remember having fun spamming random battle grounds and after every 3 or 4 buying a gem from the vender. That wasn’t at the start of DS but kinda in the mid point when they added the 6 epic gems to the vender.

Those gems off the honor point vendor were only PVP-focused and all had either resilience or spell penetration on them. Wowhead link

That being said, we absolutely need a way to obtain the regular epic gems more quickly given the extreme cadence of Cata Classic. Either dramatically increase the drop rate of geodes from Dragon Soul, put the raw gems on the valor point vendor, or even put BoP versions of the cut gems onto the Obsidian Fragment vendor (so that you can grind for your own, but it won’t completely flood the market with an uncapped number of gems).

Or hear me out make them a rear drop from the bag of shiny things from the fishing daily.
