hey guys, just a quick question. would a crusader from the medieval times be classed as a warrior or a paladin? can’t decide what is more fitting.
cheers
Ret paladin
I would say paladín because of the religious aspect
Inasmuch as none of the medieval Crusaders actually had any magic, or anything like it, I’m going to have to say Warrior.
If paladins would be complete useless than this.
If they were even smart enough to get the concept.
A paladin, I’m not proud to say. It doesn’t matter if they actually possessed any supernatural powers as long as they believed that they did.
I feel given the chance most crusaders would jump at the chance of wielding divine power like WoW paladins and some knights held the rank of paladin in real life…but realistically speaking they’re closer to warriors.
Depends on how accurate you are wanting to get I think.
If you are wanting it to be more historically accurate, I would say warrior.
If you are wanting it to touch more on the fantasy, I would say paladin.
The only possible reason they wouldn’t be paladins is the lack of magic in the real world… which doesn’t mean much.
Given that the concept for paladins in similar games was in fact originally based on the crusaders, I’m going to have to go with ‘they’d all be paladins’.
Paladin, without question.
I’d say both. Depends on their faith, level of zealotry, and rank within the church.
A simple footsoldier during the crusades would’ve likely been a warrior. Someone high-ranking or possessing a strong conviction in their faith, would be considered a paladin.
That said, according to Wikipedia, the original paladins appear in French/Frankish legend where they served under Charlemagne’s court similar to the Knights of the Round Table in Arthurian legend.
If you foolishly work “real world medieval history” into the matter, a paladin was nothing more than a warrior who worked directly for the king, and not for a lesser lord: “palatinus”, “of the palace”.
So, warrior.
A rogue, most likely.
^this basically, the crusades pulled in all kinds, from high ranking church members to random people off the street as lowly foot soldiers, so really can’t go wrong with either one OP.
I’d say a mix of both. Some crusaders were truly religious while others were not.
What about the wars in the Holy land though, surely that fits Paladin better than Warrior?
The crusades were about freeing the holy land. Human paladins in wow work for the church. Pretty obvious correlation.
I had to look for it, but Shadiversity (youtube) made a video about the possible origin of ‘paladin’. I thought others might want to hear what he has to say, even if Shad should be taken with a grain of salt.

Warrior because real life crusaders didn’t have magic powers.
Definitely a Paladin. Either Protection or Retribution.
