what made it viable? (or how was it viable?)
just curious, i missed out on many old xpacs and i want to know how it was like back then.
DK had 3 presence, blood/unholy/frost like warrior stances
Could slap on the tank presence and basically tank as any of the 3 specs
Ehhh it was ok. Good enough for dungeons. The problem with it was you had to have extra hit (23% IIRC) and more dodge/parry. A Blood DK only had to worry about 8% hit.
I was never a fan of it. Blood tank and dps, yeah baby!
what was the benefit of it that blood didnt offer?
It was cooler
It was chill.
Nothing. Blood was the superior tanking spec.
It was my favorite tanking spec out of the 3 choices. i just really liked spamming howling blast for my aoe to keep aggro and that improved frost presence talent for that extra Stam. also just the frosty aesthetic as a whole was something i really liked.
Wasn’t Frost like a more tanky, prot warrior like tanking spec with more mitigration, but Blood was able to heal off damage done and more healtanky? Or at least, with the old pressence system. Blood pressence dpsing used to be able to give any spec like +15% leech from all damage done and unholy pressence made the dk move faster and regenerate runes faster.
I did a Frost/Blood hybrid on my DK.
Deep enough into Frost for Unbreakable Armor(great defensive cd) and Howling Blast. Deep enough into Blood for Veteran of the Third War, Mark of Blood and Abominations Might. Was an insane setup for dungeons, though also pretty solid for raid tanking due to such strong cooldowns.
As far as how the specs were. Blood was more single target oriented and focused on healing(Mark of Blood, Blood Worms, Vampiric Blood). Frost had better defensives(Unbreakable Armor was insane). Had decent AoE due to Howling Blast. Unholy had the weakest defensives but was a literal monster on AoE due to…Unholy Blight? Also had Anti Magic Zone which could be a good raid cd for heavy magic portions of fights.
Didn’t frost also bring howling blast which helped with DK tanks somewhat lack of AoE ability.
There were a few builds for tanking. If you were main tanking you would do a frost/blood build for single target. It had great healing and crazy burst threat. Frost also had some good damage reduction abilitys.
Aoe tanking you would do an unholy/frost build focusing on high cleave damage with diseases and howling blast or Unholy blight builds.
There was also a magic damage reduction build in unholy/blood build.
DKs were great back then. Classes in general were really good in Wrath.
