Hello there, Wow keeps crashing with the unable to start up 3D acceleration for 3 weeks now… please help. i have tried many methods from the previous topics about 3D acceleration error but to no avail
i am unable to post dxdiag as it’s too long
Hey there,
Thank you for taking the time to reach out! The DxDiag cannot be copied in its entirety; you will need to follow these steps to post it here:
- Press Windows Key + R.
- Type DxDiag and press Enter.
- In the DxDiag window, click Save All Information.
- Name the file “dxdiag” and click Save
- Once you have that made, open the file. You’ll need to copy and paste the contents of the Text document into the post, and put four Tilde (~) marks above the DXDiag. It’ll look like this:
DXDiag goes here
If you have issues pasting here, please use Pastebin and post the link (ex: Pastebin (dot) com/123456).
i tried to do the instruction above but failed miserably still lol, unable to paste the dxdiag here but Pastebin works, https://pastebin.com/NDZ7ckW5
Lots of crashes in the amd radeon software, to which is also over 2 years old. I’d start by updating that to be a current version.
got it, will try updating and see if it works. thanks!
If would be cool if there was a “software” mode. I don’t mind the retro look.
Anyhoo, I had encountered issues where the game wouldn’t quite launch. I right-clicked on desktop to get graphics control panel to open (nVidia) and had it go to different things, mainly, the one that shows a 3D accelerated render of the logo - so this way it forces the card to render using the acceleration. It’s almost as if it “jump started” to get the game to then run. But it worked. But earlier, in other instances, the graphics control panel would crash too. I researched I had to delete some graphics system files and reopen and it would automatically rebuild. I then reinstalled drivers and that worked, and the game loads up.
I noticed at times, the game hangs when trying to load stuck in wait chain but eventually loads. Other games I have would load just fine. So probably has to do with however they designed for the game what it needs to do before it loads and starts needing to render anything with the acceleration.
I hope what I shared might add some angles and perspectives that might help get an idea of potential solutions to explore.
i have already updated to the latest AMD radeon software V 23.2.2 Adrenalin Edition and still the problem persists
https://pastebin.com/EPT0d0GQ update of dxdiag after latest update on AMD radeon software
Hey Holykaow,
Thank you for providing that DXDIAG file link! I can confirm that your latest DXDIAG shows the latest driver installed for your onboard AMD Radeon graphics. When checking the rest of the DXDIAG I noticed that there are “MoBEX” errors occurring (Event Name: MoBEX
) which could indicate damage or corruption within the Windows installation itself. Many potential problems related to your installation of Windows can be resolved by creating a new administrator account, logging into it, and trying the game there.
If the game only works consistently on the new admin account, this could indicate damaged or missing Windows system files or an issue with how the old user account is configured. This is somewhat common, and the easiest fix is to move any user-specific files that you wish to keep from the old user account to the new admin account. You can also work with Microsoft’s Support to troubleshoot the problem with the old account if preferred.
Hopefully, one of these steps gets you back to playing uninterrupted. Let us know if you have any questions going forward. Cheers!
i have been helping a mate of mine, troubleshooting his wow via TeamViewer for a few days now. He reinstalled wow using a phone internet quota instead of an ISP… and it blew to his face lol. He’s sending his laptop tomorrow and i shall do the instruction above, thank you so much! will let you know…
Hello, i have tried using a new administrator account to play wow. The same error occurred, is there a possibility that maybe the VGA is not working as intended? damaged or something?

I have the same issue, within moments of the game being open I get black screen/stutter and the game crashes and says “World of Warcraft was unable to startup 3D acceleration” I have never had issues like this. I also noticed after the first crash and logging back in that I managed to do 30 mins of dailies around Icecrown and it was only when I flew over water that I noticed all the water had been replaced by black and that the skybox had a black line running through it.
This is playing Wotlk Classic
You are having live kernel events that are typically related to corrupted graphics drivers .
1. Fault bucket , type 0
2. Event Name: LiveKernelEvent
3. Response: Not available
4. Cab Id: 0
* Problem signature:
5. P1: 141
Try a clean reinstall of a fresh download of the drivers using DDU.
If this is in response to my DxDiag, then I have recently uninstalled Geforce Experience, manually removed all associated drivers to my Network adaptor and GPU and re-installed the most recent updates. The game seems to be working fine now, if a little faster than before, so you would’ve been right with your diagnosis!
Ironically, minutes after my last comment I got crashed again with different error message this time.
I can’t share my print screens here sadly
Hey there!
Thank you for posting your DxDiag and providing those details. The most recent crash log that I see is referencing a sudden loss of communication with the GPU or graphics driver. As Zungar mentioned, a clean & reinstall of the video drivers is the best first step for these “TDR” errors (Timeout Detection and Recovery).
Here’s the link to the DDU tool.
And here is the guide on using the DDU software.
You can find the most recent driver for your NVIDIA graphics card here directly from NVIDIA’s website.
If the issue persists, we are a bit limited in how we can assist with these sorts of issues beyond recommending that you check for overheating components and scan for potentially missing or damaged Windows system files, so it may be best to contact a certified local computer technician to diagnose the system. Alternatively, Microsoft’s Support team may be able to discern more info from the system or error logs.
I hope this info helps! Let us know if you have any questions going forward.
Holykaow - Thanks for the update! It is difficult to diagnose as we are limited to speculation with the tools available to us. If the crash only occurs when the laptop is connected to an external monitor via VGA, then the cable could be faulty.
You can also scan for potentially missing or damaged Windows system files, but if that doesn’t work then your best option is to contact the laptop manufacturer to diagnose the system. Alternatively, Microsoft’s Support team may be able to discern additional information from the system or error logs.
Hello, i have tried a clean reinstall by using DDU tool+guide above and download directly from the nvidia graphics cards/AMD website. I have also tried scanning windows system files. i was keeping my fingers crossed but alas… it was no use, the same error happened again. “World of warcraft is unable to start up 3D acceleration” here’s the latest dxdiag
it has been frustrating, my friend even said maybe he should get a new pc/laptop?
