World of Warcraft; New Player Guide, Basics

This is a very simple new player guide, but vastly important.
So you have heard that World of Warcraft is a great game to play. This may be your first mmorpg. In fact, this may even be the first online game you have ever played period. You heard about Wow from friends, family, school-mates, or people from work. And you would like the experience of adventuring in a magical fantasy realm alongside other real people.
Well you’ve come to the right place. Yes, World of Warcraft is that good.

BUT! How do you even begin? You want to play the right way so you can be as good as possible at playing the game. You don’t want to appear to fail at playing the game in front of other players. You want to make reasonable progress so you can level up and be a useful member of a dungeon group. You might even join a guild and you want to be a useful member. Right?

So in an effort to be as good a Wow player as you can. You start to search the internet for player guides. You will encounter quite a few. Including You Tube videos. But this may come with a shock. All of these supposed player guides make Wow out to be a hugely complicated game. With a humongous learning curve that makes it sound like you will need a university degrees in game theory, mathematics, and computer science.

You stand there looking like a deer in headlights. Overwhelmed with the immensity of the challenge. At this point you start thinking "Wow is way to complicated. It’s gonna take years for me to learn all this stuff. But don’t give up. The biggest reason that all these help guides seem so complicated is because they are meant for Max Level Players at End Game. Not new players to the game.

So in my humble effort to help the new player to World of Warcraft enjoy the game right from the very start is this advice: IGNORE ALL OF THOSE MAX LEVEL HELP GUIDES! Don’t bother to search for them. they are just going to confuse you. And make you feel helpless.

Right now, do what most of the Veteran Players did when they first started to play Wow 20 years ago. Just create a character you think looks cool to you. And start playing. That’s it! If you are a brand new player with a new account and no other characters on that account, you will automatically be sent to Exile’s Reach as your first leveling experience. This is a short tutorial that will teach you the basics of game-play. Just relax, follow the prompts that the NPCs (Non Player Characters) that serve as your guides give you and have fun. After that you’ll be free to travel the world. If you create more characters you’ll get a chance to start them in your races starting zone. Where you just pick up quests from NPCs and do them to get experience and loot drops for better equipment and money.

As a brand new Wow player at level 1 you don’t need a degree from Harvard University to play Wow. Nor will you ever need one. The Wow Veteran Players started playing Wow just like you. At level one. Note: Do not buy a $60.00 character level Boost. Those are for characters you create later on if you want, but it’s not necessary for a new player.

Do what the Veteran Players did when they started playing Wow. Just start playing the game in a casual NO STRESS way. World of Warcraft is a Huge game, with 20 years of expansions and quality of life improvements. Plus a HUGE game world worthy of exploration adventure and enjoyment. As you level up naturally you will learn how to play. Just immerse yourself in this realm of fantasy and enjoy your magical experience. Live the Adventure!

I hope that helped. Good luck on your Journey.

I would also like to mention something important here. If you are coming to wow because a friend or family member wants you to play with them. Don’t let them push you into rushing to their level. Trying to go from level one to max level in a very short time will be stressful. Specially if you never played before. Don’t do this!

Tell your friend to agree on the same server that you both will play on. Your friend needs to make a level one character also so you can both start playing together at the same level and help each other with quests etc. Otherwise you just play on your own pace and enjoy the game the way it was designed to be enjoyed.

That is actually a good wall of text.

Long time players sometimes say that they have lost the game’s magic. Well the magic they wax nostalgic for is the experience of being a new player in a game going into the unknown, as it were. Seeing for the first time things you never saw before, a whole new world. The fun of watching your character progress and become good at their class. Exploring around the big world, seeing the sights. That was the magical experience of wow. And the brand new player of wow has a great opportunity to experience this wow magic for their first time. So just take it casually. Smell the flowers along the way. Enjoy the ride.

New Player Advice:

  1. Stay out of the forums unless absolutely necessary.
  2. Whenever you have a question about the game, always go to Google and ask your question and then add the word “Wowhead” afterward.
  3. Play what YOU like and not what Raider IO or Icy-Veins tells you is top tier. you will love this game a whole lot longer. If you play something you enjoy and not just whatever slot your guild needs filled.
  4. Ignore other player’s opinions unless they confirm your suspicions. Still trust Wowhead more.
  5. Play to have fun. The moment you turn it into a full-time job is the moment you fall out of love with it.

New players need only to start playing the game. There is really nothing to worry about. You will start at the character creation screen where you will create your first character which is just choosing a race, and class and appearance and name. After that you will spawn in the starting zone as a level 1 character. From there just start doing the local area quests. These you get from Quest givers (NPCS). And have fun. That’s all you need do.
