Buckle up, folks! I’m here to make/ruin your day with this amazing/awful idea that you’ll love/hate!
Ok so right now the multiverse concept is all the rage, right? Marvel’s doing it, that one movie about that one chick who was everything, everywhere, all the time or whatever. You get it. Ok so but like… imagine the next expansion dabbles in that.
What if Diablo was the expansion boss? What if you had to team up with Zeratul and Jim Raynor as they get sucked into Azeroth from some rift that opened up the multiverse and characters from other Blizzard franchises started pouring in? I know Heroes of the Storm is essentially this, but what if it was the subject of an entire expansion?
Oh and if this MS deal ever goes through we’d have a whole lot of other potential characters dropping in for a cameo. I’m talking Banjo-Kazooie… Rash, Pimple, and Zitz… The Master Chief. You name it!

WoD was a multiverse expansion. People hated it.
No that was a Back to the Future expansion.
People didn’t hate it because it was a multiverse expansion. People hated it because it was so poorly executed. It could have been great, but …

It’s as terrible as taking a dozen good, individual foods and eating it all at once. Hot fudge brisket rocky road clam lobster corn dogs anyone? 
First, multiverses aren’t a new thing, it’s been a pop culture mainstay since “Flash of Two Worlds” came out in 1961, and the basic concept goes back even further than that. Second, WoW already has a multiverse since we have parallel universe from WoD. Third, other MMO’s had multiverses before WoW (City of Heroes, for instance).
People didn’t hate it because of the time travel / multiverse story, they hated it because garrisons were awful, tons of content was cut, and the first major “content” patch consisted of a selfie cam and nothing else.

Cursed AF. Cross franchise was a really great theme for HOTS, but besides inconsequential easter eggs, being made a core part of WoW makes the return of the Jailer look like a great idea.
