Just my hairbrain thought that the characters chosen were deliberately done so to represent each of the expansions:

Burning Crusade-Illidan
Wrath of the Lich King-the Lich King
Catacylsm-Thrall
Mist of Pandaria-Jaina
Warlords of Draenor-Gul’dan
Legion-Alleria
Battle for Azeroth-Anduin
Shadowlands-Sylvanas
Dragonflight- Alexstrasza
The War Within-Xal’athath

I guess. Having them wear their modern costumes makes it harder to line it up

I will say Gul’dan for both WoD and Legion but other than that this makes sense to me.

True, but if you switch it up Alleria kinda loses her place because she didn’t do anything in WoD. At least Legion was her grand entrance and the start of her journey in World of Warcraft that is currently playing out in TWW.
