Worgen druid forms :cat:

why cats?

Worgen and modern druidismā€¦ is an interesting thing, and Toranis isnā€™t far off here. It all goes back to the controlling nature of the Cenarion Circle, and their common core :tm: curriculum. As you might recall from Curse of the Worgen, the worgen came first, and the Cenarion Circle was actually founded by Malfurion to make sure no one could use druidism in a way he sees as incorrect ever again. The Circleā€™s conquest to control druids worldwide has been an ongoing story, as they slowly absorb more and more previously independent sects of druids into their fold over time. In Warcraft III, it was the Druids of the Talon and Druids of the Claw. In Cataclysm, they took in the Harvest Witches. In Legion, they found the Druids of the Fin, Antler, and The Ashen. On one hand, this is great that they have an order to follow. But on the other hand, this isnā€™t lead by a council, this is

Cenarion teachings

To be fair to the Circle though, many of these groups have become more powerful and skilled as a result of it, such as the Harvest Witches like Celestine of the Harvest becoming ā€œInconspicuous Bearsā€, and more mulgore tauren and darkspear trolls becoming skilled druids as well. The question is, if the Circle has banned one form, and the reason of their founding was to restrict and teach their own style of druidism, how many rules and laws do they have in place now? How many Harvest Witch, Tauren, or Troll practices are they expected to leave behind? Ingame, we see the trolls have a degree of freedom since they earn their flight form from Hiā€™reek and not Aviana, but besides that there appears to be scarcely little in terms of cultural variety.

  • ā€œThe War of the Satyr had taken its roll on the kaldoriei, still struggling to reshape their ancient culture after the sundering. But it was, despite that, a time of innovationā€¦ when druids had a passion to experiment with new forms, learnign what they were truly capable of. Regardless, Malfurion Stormrage had begun to restrict the druidsā€™ freedom and establish boundaries, limiting the great potential of his flockā€¦ the wise amongst them spoke out.ā€ - Alpha Prime, Curse of the Worgen, issue 1.
  • The [worgen origins] forced Malfurion to reflect on the state of druidism. Without some form of regulation, he concluded that individuals like Ralaar would inevitably go too far in their application of druidic power. Malfurion and his followers therefore created the Cenarion Circle, a harmonious order that would guide and keep watch over the worldā€™s druids and their practices. The Cenarion Circleā€™s first great task was to deal with the worgen threat. - Chronicle 1, loc 2058
  • ā€œIf these Druids of the Scythe have shown us anything, brothers, it is that our great power comes with a price. We must establish a way for our practice. We have experimented long enough to know the truths of each form. I have consulted with Cenarius. And it is with his blessing that I establish the Cenarion Circle.ā€ - Curse of the Worgen issue 3

All and all, Iā€™d have to agree with our foxy friend here. Worgen druids specifically are former Harvest Witches whose powers have been amplified by the curse and who have been taken in by the Cenarion Circle to be taught as druids. This means that if a worgen harvest witch is taken in by the Circle, they would be learning that style of druidism, ā€œCenarion druidismā€ as I prefer to call it, from the kaldorei. This means they are learning the common core material from their own personal kaldorei senpai shanā€™do. Including earning Ashamaneā€™s gift, cat form.

Forms and control

As for gaining control, using a druid form does the opposite. As you may recall from the comic, worgen are the result of two deities, Goldrinn and Elune. Goldrinnā€™s raw power is so full of instinct and rage that it is difficult to control, and druids are prone to getting lost to it. It is Eluneā€™s power in the worgen curse that makes them appear only half wolf, and gives them the control needed to speak and function. So thatā€™s Elune helping with control, not the wild god.

Similarly, we have cases where druids have lost themselves to their druid forms entirely, such as the Druids of the Claw in Warcraft III, or the various druids in the Verdant Wilds island expedition, some of which are cats. And third, we have the Ashamane lore in the Feral Druid Artifact Questline, which shows how difficult it can be to control all the instincts of cat form, especially one drawing straight from Ashamane.

Why not just worgen form?

Related to this subject, I would love to see a glyph option that allows you to use worgen or wolf form, and I support those threads on the forums. That said, it does make sense why worgen members of the Cenarion Circle would use cat form. For one, it is a fighting style - like a martial arts - that the night elves have perfected over ten thousand years, meanwhile worgen are very new to them and difficult to control. In fact, there is a great quote in Wolfheart that shows how hesitant kaldorei are around worgen, which makes a great deal of sense considering their bloody history with eachother during the War of the Satyr.

  • As Eadrik obeyed, Malfurion saw how the presence of this one human distracted the night elves in the vicinity almost as much as their concern over their aging didā€¦ despite the fact that humans and other members of the Alliance had had access to Darnassus since its founding. It was clear that Eadrik was recognized as one of Gennā€™s aides and, thus, also recognized for what else he was. - Wolfheart, ch 6

The kaldorei were the first to become worgen, and the night elves bitten by these original worgen turned into worgen themselves in a matter of moments. To the night elves, the origin of the worgen was not only a betrayal and uprising of rebel druids, but also a pandemic. And now, to have a whole host of worgen living among themā€¦ cannot be easy. In that way, teaching a worgen druid to fight in cat form may be safer for the night elf, or at least puts their mind at ease more than fighting alongside a werewolf.

So yes! When it comes to roleplay, between common core teachings, testing your level of control, or keeping your night elf allies at ease, a worgen character can still have plenty of reason to use cat form. That is, if you want to. Not all druids use all forms, and it is quite common for druids to have a preferred form and favorite god. Plus, there are some differences between a catā€™s grace and a wolfā€™s swiftness that can make both Cat form and worgen form worthwhile to a druid. If I said the cat form has no use, Iā€™d be lion. :bacon:

Affliction is passed through biting correct? Is there a way to prevent affliction spreading via metal atop of teeth/fangs?

Worgen Beastmastery

Would a worgen beastmaster accidentally eat their friend bambi?

There is no solid lore example of this happening. However, both comics, the novel, and several questlines depict worgen as apex predators and ferocious carnivores.

  • In Curse of the Worgen, the newly-turned Halford Ramsey comes across a sheep, and it is in pieces in moments.
  • In Wolfheart, Genn and his royals hunt raw boar on all fours, and his courier Eadrik even warns elves that young members of the pack will jump at anything they perceive as prey, and that you should be cautious when walking around worgen territory.
  • Dark Riders goes even further and introduces us to the inner workings of Nightbane worgen society, and their ravenous, starved, and cannibalistic tendencies. Taking a look at the Nightbane in-game, they have even begun to eat the local wolves, though they are leaving the skunks alone.
  • On a related note, Malfurion tried the pack form once, and was compelled to attack his own half-deer shanā€™do.
  • Similarly, Durotanā€™s Lords of War short animation is a good example of rage in the middle of battle, and how animal companions can be caught in the crossfire.

Human beastmaster turned worgen

A wolfman having a deer as an animal companion is going to be overall unwise. The wolfman is going to have powerful instincts to eat the cheeseburger-with-legs, and the prey animal would be compelled to run, much like the instincts depicted between the lion and zebra characters in Madagascar. It would be like giving an alcoholic a companion made of alcohol, or an addict a companion made of the drug. That said, if the person had the rabbit pet or cow companion etc before being bitten, this struggle may be quite interesting to play out in their ongoing story, contributing to their struggles against instinct, and ultimately leading to either rehoming the pet, or eating it.

Worgen beastmastery

But in the case of worgen hunters that are already worgen, and -then- get a moose or sheep pet, no, that does not sound realistic or plausible considering canon predatory tendencies in all worgen. Personally, I stick with lupine, canine, or avian creatures for my worgen hunters. When it comes to wolves and wolf-like companions, there are several examples ingame of such a bond, with some worgen like Packmaster Nandos even able to summon more, or the Bloodmoon pack having a bond with the local sentient worg pack. Avian creatures are predatory as well, and can easily fly out of harmā€™s way if needbe. Examples even include Odo the Blindwatcher, who kept two giant vampire bats. :bacon:

Worgen and Fire Magic

Is it worth the risk?

An interesting question, and one Iā€™m sure many a firemage must ask themseleves, worgen or otherwise. Worgen in particular, although they do not seem to hate or fear fire and use it in battle quite often, are particularly vulnerable to it should it get caught in their fur. Humans can simply take off a burning cloak or jacket, but fur cannot be so easily removed and, during such panic, shapeshifting to human form would be exceedingly difficult. That does make fire magic a potential risk for worgen.

My go-to would be to assume that with such teachings, a firemage would be tought how to put it out. Another popular option I have seen frequently is wards, an immunity and protection from fire whilst one is spreading it. Maintaining human form as long as possible may be advised as well to reduce flammability, but worgen form does grant greater eyesight that may be invaluable when throwing fireballs for accuracy. :bacon:

Worgen Grooming

Do you shave, and where?

As far as we know, being a worgen does not effect the appearance of your human form. You donā€™t grow hairy palms, feet, ears, or any other abnormal growth in human form, which appears completely human; a skill that became invaluable to the Wolf Cult when infiltrating Gilneas.

As for worgen form, fur and hair does not have much lore besides being lupine. In the comics, we are shown that male genitalia is hidden from view and well covered by thick fur, that fur on the underbelly can be lighter in color, and that fur on the forearms, upper back, and head can be thicker, and that worgen can vary in color overall. Being lupine fur, and being half human, more can be inferred from real-life canis lupus species and real life humans. Like humans, color, thickness, curls, etc can all vary greatly from person to person. Wolves have a short lower-coat and a long over-coat, the former being shed to keep cool in summer and grown back to keep warm in winter.

That saidā€¦ do worgen women actually try to shave their legs? Probably not. Although fur might become uncomfortable under clothes and start sticking out of the fabric, a completely shaved lupine leg is not exactly appealing to look at. See: shaved bear on google. Trimming may be an option, to keep the whole coat looking smooth. As for the other spots? Raedolf canā€™t really speak from experience, being proudly all natural. For others of the pack, Iā€™m sure trimming or shaving are common. :bacon:

Transmission

Can you wear protection?

The worgen curse is spread to humans and kaldorei by two primary means; the bite and the blood. The bite can take anywhere between a few hours (Mardigan) to a few days (Halford) to turn you, depending on the situation, while consuming a goblet of blood (Silverpine) will have much more immediate effects. That right there is about as much as we know. As far as we know, all worgen can spread the curse in this way, regardless of mental state.

What we do not know, however, is what part of the body actually carries the curse. Some have theorized that it is the fangs, since it is Goldrinnā€™s fang - the Scythe of Elune - that is the origin of the curse, and the bite that spreads it. However, the blood spreads the curse as well, leading some to theorize it is contained in body fluids or red blood cells, which are present in both blood and saliva.

It is hard to say, since we donā€™t know if it is the teeth or the saliva that transmits the curse during the bite. If you are a worgen coming into nonlethal battle with humans and kaldorei, and wish not to turn them, it is better to use your claws until opting for lethal combat. A muzzle is another option, albeit a humiliating one, and might be better used for worgen prisoners than in combat. :bacon:

If it is the teeth, I wonder if it would still work if a worgen in their human (or kaldorei) form bit someone.

I donā€™t think it does, it has to be in worgen form. I also think intent matters, if a worgen is biting with the intent of turning then it will infect the person, if they are just biting to bite or kill then I donā€™t think it will infect someone.

You could wonder the same about human-form blood or saliva. If the curse is more a spiritual curse than a biological virus, and worgen are spiritually worgen even in human form - thus the druidic abilities even in human form - the form might not matter. Just to be sure, though, when Raedolf gave the bite in human form, he did it Underworld Lucian style; growing a maw of fangs to bite into the neck-shoulder. The real confusing question came up in another situation; when a worgen deathknight bit a human guildie. In that situation, we werenā€™t sure if worgen deathknights can transmit the curse, and we had another worgen bite the human just to be sure.

I disagree, as there has been no lore for intent, and plenty to support accidentally spreading the curse. Such as the case of the player character, infected by an infected named Josiah Avery. Be careful with your love bites; they will leave more than a hickey.

I had a question about the infection and I tried looking through the first post. If I missed it and this was already answered, my bad.

I know the meta reason is most likely ā€œitā€™s an alliance race so Blizzard wonā€™t show non-humans/night elves from being worgenā€ but is there anything specifically denying the possibility of a troll contracting lycanthropy? Iā€™d imagine that, since physiologically they should be much closer to night elves than even humans are, that it should at least be theoretically doable, but I couldnā€™t find anything that specifically blocked the capability.

Is it breaking Lore for worgen to have tails?
