Why can Worgen be Druids? They’re just humans that were bitten and turned into puppies, since when did the people of Gilneas study druidicism?
“I can turn into a dog now so I can turn into anything I want!”
Also, why can Worgen be Priests, but not Paladins? Since the light didn’t leave them when they were bitten as a priest, why is there no Worgen Paladins? Gilneas has a giant damn cathedral in it for god’s sake.
The Worgens have a close connection to Goldrinn, the druidic god of the wolf. In fact the scythe of elune is a big part of the lore as it’s what enabled the Gilnean people to eventually conquer and manage their affliction.
The fact that they then turned around and made it the balance druid weapon is nothing short of ridiculous, but I digress.
As far as priests but not Paladins, I have no bloody idea. Maybe there was no Paladin orders in Gilneas before the wolf plague so no one there knows how to do it.
They do explain it in the worgen starting experience. And if you think about it, Warcraft druids are shapeshifters, and Worgen already have shapeshifting built in (as it were) – they’re a natural fit for the class.
Any of you ever play Dungeons and dragons? Remember gathering around the table with friends in a good old dungeon crawl, and everyone meets each other’s characters? Elf rogue, human Druid, orc monk…maybe some things that are a bit outside the “norm” but still made sense. Then you had that one guy who shows up. he’s a human who looks so much like a girl he could pass for an elf, who describes himself having goku anime hair, and he’s also a master duelist, but he’s a mage with one level in fighter. He’s also negotiated with the game master (GM) that he’s the only one allowed to have a special attack that decapitates anyone if he says the words “you’re mine” once per session. And he doesn’t say much, but man, he’s flashy. (I think I just described every blood elf out there…)
Fact is, there’s a whole lot of classes that just don’t make sense for some races. Like shamans being available for almost every race, even alliance, even though shamans were originally perceived as tribal leaders or wise men of tribes in WoW. Or Tauren paladins, gnome warriors, list goes on.
But it’s ok. Everyone can be anything and everything they want in this modern world can’t they? Heaven forbid we have ~gasp~ restrictions that inhibit someone wanting to play a 2 foot tall gnome fury warrior…or an orc mage…
I’ve always felt some classes should be a bit more restricted to races/factions. But it’s ok. Now everyone can let their freak flag fly and be a rebel by playing a goblin shaman. Cause their so…tribal. With their scientific advancements and belief in money instead of the gods of nature, which are completely opposite of goblins as a whole.
Long before humans turned to the Light the ancient tribes practiced a sort of primitive druidism with nature and elemental magic. Most human civilizations eventually dropped the old ways, but Gilneas held on to them a little bit. Gilnean “druids” were called harvest-witches originally. The worgen curse actually made them stronger.
So the foundation was already there. When they joined the Alliance the night elves started teaching them true druidism and they kicked off from that.
As for paladins, Gilneas does follow the Light, but paladins are fundamentally different from priests. Priests are normal people who channel the Light from the outside. Paladins are infused with it through a special ritual, it completely changes them.
Gilneas wasn’t fond of the Alliance in the Second War when the paladin orders were founded. They didn’t send candidates to the Silver Hand and quickly broke off once the war ended. There was a lack of interest in it and so no worgen paladins.
They practiced minor druidism as harvest witches, then got infected with a druidy curse, then got blessed by a druidy goddess ritual thingy, which then allowed them to control said druidy curse and their druidy form
Haha! Not that, although that post is going on pretty long now in the forums.
Like I said, it adds diversity and flavour. It’s just odd sometimes when you think about it from a lore or traditional RPG trope perspective. It’s ok they do it differently. It still is laughable at times for me personally, but I don’t begrudge anyone that ya know?
The Druids are weird. It makes sense because the origins of the Worgen curse is Druidism, but the Gilneans were kind of Druids before the curse. I’ve heard before that they had a little bit of Life magic and when they got the curse they became more in tune with Druidism.
My understanding for Paladins is that the Paladins were created after Gilneas left the Alliance, but I’m not sure if that timeline checks out.
Goblins used to be very primitive and tribal, descending from a race related to pygmies which are still also very shamanistic. Nowadays we use our technology and business skillz to enhance our totems and bargain with elementals.
And honestly I do agree with you that some of the lore stretches they’ve done in recent years to get the race/class combos they have is pretty ridiculous and often reeks of “look how many $25 race changes we’re going to get” syndrome.
What’s so nonsensical about Gnome warriors in this particular setting? And no, shaman are not available for “almost every race”, unless you define “almost every” as 7 out of 13.
If race/class combinations were really this free-for-all, we’d have Draenei warlocks and Forsaken priests.
I didn’t say anything was nonsensical or”
“wrong” with it. What I’m saying is, in my opinion, it’s a little silly. And ok, shaman is available for 7 out of 13 races. Back in the day it wasn’t available for half as many if I remember. Eventually over time it’s become available as more races come out. And for some of them, it’s an odd fit.
Put it to ya this way; right now there is blood elf and night elf demon hunters. The blood elf demon hunter thing is already a bit of a stretch but that’s ok, it works. Now imagine if they started letting all races be demon hunters. Would it appease some players who wanna play them as some oddball race? Sure. Would it make any sense whatsoever? Nope.
That’s all I’m trying to say. And you’re right that if it was a complete FFA, there would be some crazy allowances like dranei warlocks. But ya never know…enough people out there ask for it, lore can sometimes get tossed out the window for the sake of a few dollars more!
