Reflecting back on these to expansions I do truly believe I had more fun with WoD. There is not to many redeeming quality of SL that I like. Nathria was a great raid but aside that boy
Warlords of Draenor may have stunk, but even compared to that Shadowlands was still stinkier.
Garrisons were at least fun at first.
WoD lacked content but I wanted to play the game and loved when I had stuff to do (e.g. raid clear)
SL had stuff to do, but I wanted to do none of it.
I’d gladly take WoD over SL for another 2 years.
I didn’t hate WoD even while people actively hated when it was live/current. But I’d agree- I like the catch-up mechanics involved with professions, I enjoyed the isolation of my garrison, I liked Ashran and commonly ran groups in comms for it. Raiding then was also really good. Some of the best times IMO.
Wod had too few things to do but what we did have was good.
SL was just them trying to keep people busy with very dull chores.
Didn’t play much of either expansion. Covenants in general and all the bland borrowed power really turned me off of playing Shadowlands, and I was just busy with other things during the WOD era.
No shot people unironically played warlords of draenor and think it was worse than shadowlands. I refuse to believe this revisionist history. Absolutely everything about WoD was horrible except for leveling.
i dont think people remember wod had zero content outside of raids and pvp. there was nothing to do. shadowlands for all its pitfalls was way better than wod.
I base my opinion on personal experience.
I actually got to Warlord of Draenor endgame before I stopped playing due to lack of content.
I got about halfway through the Kyrian Zone when Shadowlands launched before I quit and made a character in FFXIV and played that for two years.
WOD was by far my best expac for making gold. 10 alts as tailors making bags that I was getting 1300 gold apiece in ah. At the start of tanaan jungle I made a killing farming felblight. Was by far better than SL which I rarely played.
I won’t argue. WoD’s stinkage won’t show to anyone leveling through it. The actual leveling experience felt pretty good, still does, to tell the truth. Shadowlands, on the other hand, is a thief of joy right from the jump.
wod had horrible class balance and class design. ashran was required for bis pvp trinket (accolade stat sticks) and no one liked ashran it was universally hated. Of which btw was completely RNG in its acquisition method.
The pvp meta towards the end was turbo cleave/wwdk or auto lose. The pvp meta at the start was so bad brewmaster monks was better than windwalker. 9 second kidney shot durations and killing spree unccable uncounterable one shots. Actually unkillable dks, i ran triple DK with flarkness to 2500. Feral druids with saberon furry suits having full access to their entire kit in cat form. SURVIVAL HUNTERS KILLING YOU ENTIRELY IN AUTO SHOTS WHILE SLOWING YOU PERMANENTLY FROZEN AMMO AND A 16 SECOND CD TRAP.
highmaul was a buggy garbage raid entirely. BRF was good but HFC was absolute trash if you was progressing mythic. It was when peak weak aura meta began as almost all the fights required it. Mythic mannoroth was an actual guild killer.
and thats… really all there was. The open world was pointless to grind or be in and you was never doing anything in it outside of apex lfg grinds for the cloak. Which was just 40 man raids of mindlessly walking in a circle killing trivial mobs for 30 minutes.
Your garrison was literally a mobile phone game hub. AH, prof resources, infinite gold gen, weekly mythic raid gear from sending followers on a 12 hour mission. No reason to ever leave it or interact with the world.
Tannan jungle is quite possibly the worst zone blizzard has ever created. The reps associated with it, which was required for flying, was literally do the same exact 2 daily quest a day. Now do that every day for 5 weeks and you can fly in zones you have nothing to do in.
Challenge mode dungeons was significantly worse than MoP CMs in part due to how garbage class design was. This is when blizzard had the great idea to prune every spec down to the most primordial form. For example Blood dks and arms warriors had literally no single target filler, no heart strike no heroic strike no overpower no slam. Arms was literally mortal strike, execute, and whirlwind. Thats your entire rotation
Theres so much more i can go on about how wod was horrible. If you didnt like shadowlands content thats fine I quit 2 months into the expansion so i hated it too, but thats a personal problem, warlords had actually no good content outside of BRF
SL by far the worst of all expacks , never seen so many people leave the game so fast
Shadowlands is a D tier expansion especially if you are a casual, but its not even near how bad WoD was. The biggest crime shadowlands commited was being a mediocre expansion right after BFA.
The only expansion that you can convince me was worse than WoD was BFA.
Are you down with MOP. Yea you know me.
Shadowlands still has no flying in the Maw or Korthia.
That automatically makes it garbage tier.
Then you dont even know why shadowlands was bad. Dont get me wrong, I did the same thing, quit 2 months into slands and played ffxiv. Resubbed for 1 month on the .1 patch, was still awful and quit.
WoD is better than the last several expansions combined. Sorry it offered a lot and had better class design. Not only that we had the best Dps spec ever introduced into the game which is Glad Stance Warriors.
I’d gladly play WoD over any of the recent expansions and have fun.
SL was the worst of everything. Time-gating, systems, zones, questing, class design, gearing, story. Everything was bad.
I miss WoD and was the last time I really had fun in WoW. It’s been downhill since. I miss my Old Prot Warrior and Glad Stance Warrior. DF might have some potential eventually but it’s far off from being as good as WoD unless design philosophies change.
I did go through Shadowlands with my Evoker fairly recently to catch up on the story. (I know…lol)
The main story was boring, the Covenant story was slightly better (I chose Night Fae). But then I got to the Maw, even though I spent a much shorter time than many people it was a 100% MISERABLE experience. Even after getting far enough in the story to allow mounting, it was still horrendous.
As I was going through WoD I never had a moment that made me just want to put the game down. I played it, had fun and then endgame was just a wall with nothing to do.
Shadowlands was a strain on my patience from Start to Finish.
Shadowlands had its problems but I really enjoyed it overall. Certainly more than BfA (First expansion I ever quit), and Warlords.
