Seems so the move with Arcane being a hit, why not a WoW based anime series? So many story lines available, and I wouldn’t even care if it wasn’t mainstream WoW characters. The Universe is just just so robust with Lore.
Probably because video game show/movie adaptions are very hit and miss…and WoW’s first attempt was a big ole stinky miss.
Hard to justify wasting money again.
From the wiki:
“Warcraft grossed $47.4 million in the United States, and $391.7 million in other countries, for a worldwide total of $439 million. Given its $160 million production budget and additional $110 million spent on promotions, the film needed to earn $450–500 million in order to break-even. In July 2016, The Hollywood Reporter said the film lost the studio around $15 million, although noted several executives put the losses in the $30–40 million range.”
And keep in mind, that was in 2016…the fan base isn’t what it was back then either.
There was originally a plan for Netflix to work with Blizzard on a series like Arcane, initially for Diablo, but it could have expanded to Warcraft or even Overwatch.
Bobby Kotick screwed that up when he sued Netflix for ‘poaching Activision-Blizzard’s CFO’.
Cuz animation like that is EXPENSIVE and they can barely afford multiple cgi vids. They went nuts with those in BfA and now we barely see them.
I didn’t know that.
Why am I not surprised.
I think a big chunk of it is blizz isn’t really capable of doing the type of writing necessary for a show like that to be a success, and they do not like giving others creative control.
That too. Apparently the 2 seasons of Arcane cost $250 Million…(Including advertising and promotions)
Like I don’t give two dangs about LoL or Arcane but even I can tell that animation was NOT cheap. That stuff was made with love ( and money, but it was fuel for the love )
First, in my opinion, if they did a series, Anime does not fit thematically even with some of the short cinematics. Not everyone is an anime fan, and they would risk isolating some fans by doing more than a 2 minute splash moment. Second, if even ONE detail was out of place in the show, the fans would explode. Just look at the Warcraft movie.
The series would have to follow Warcraft Lore to the letter of the lore, and the appearance of characters. They considered doing a sequel as an Anime, but ran into some technical difficulties. Again… this is SOLELY an opinion and I am only one voice of 7M+ players. There is a short animation in that style, but to only have 38k views with so many fans worldwide, it is anyone’s guess what that means… if anything.
It falls into the same category as “hey, let’s make a hit MMO like WoW”
Amusingly the Veilguard artstyle would actually fit WoWs toonyness super well.
( Altho I do prefer how the elves in Veilguard looked in DA2. They had big ol eyes like bugs. They were neat. Even WoW elves are kinda buggy with their long eyebrows looking like antenna )
