Hey windwalkers! I recently picked up a 445 mythic razor coral after reading how great it was, but I realized after simming it, it comes out around 2.7% lower than my 445 phial, which isn’t even that great for WW. This can’t be right, can it? Do sims just not play nice with this trinket? When is the best time to consume the stacks, guessing when 2 min CDs are up?
Just wanting some insight on this, hoping for the best!
Something odd about that trinket, bloodmallet at one point had it as the absolute best, however now its among the worst. The reason i THINK is because it doesn’t sync up with anything. We use Cyc. Blast trinket with every touch of death, so we can’t use the razor coral.
The sim seems to recall the coral every 20 seconds
I personally don’t like the trinket, it requires far too much micro management for my own personal tastes, 2 on use trinkets is rough.
It takes time to line up razor coral, and it’s basically only gonna be useful in a raid type situation where you’ll be on a single target for a long time.
Badger is right when he says it doesn’t sync up with anything. You kinda have to just fit it into your CD rotation. I usually use the first part of Razor Coral as soon as I can in a boss encounter, so probably 20-30 seconds in. When i reactivate the coral, i usually do it 3 minutes into the fight after 2nd ToD + Laser SEF burst and use it along with 2nd Condensed Life-Force and an SEF. At that point i usually have around 15-20 stacks so i get really high crit.
If a fight is under 3 minutes long, it might be better to not use Razor Coral. I basically don’t use it outside of raids. I use Plume for M+ and PvP.

After talking with a guildie I was told that I should be using cyclotronic with every SEF/TOD as SEF increases its damage by 30% for whatever reason, and using coral with every other SEF. It worked out pretty well on a dummy but was a bit to manage!
It’s the manual management I’m bad at personally. Yes it’s 1% more dps than my other trinket, but that’s with perfect timing… I am not ashamed to admit I am no pro monk, my guild does heroic not mythic. I will take the inkpod over this.
That said, the trinket itself is cool and unique and I hope for more cool trinkets in 8.3
Actually I’d like to add one thing to this. There is a potential for minor Razor Coral use in situations where there are a crap lode of targets and you just nuke one down faster than the others and get the small crit bonus against the others.
I only got the Heroic one … and also read its bis. Then i went to the doll and did play some with it … its like 2-5% damage from the proc plus whatever you get when u gain the +crit buff. I was not really impressed by that at all.
I also have that Phial … and what i like at it is it’s good in AoE and Single … and its Arcane Damage not Physical.
I would love to get that Inkpod … that might be good too.
Yeah i am not a big fan of on-use Trinkets … unless they like that Cyclonic Blast.
