Windwalker DPS help

I’m at a loss. 209 ilvl. Doing crap DPS compared to others at my ilvl. I feel like I’m not doing anything THAT wrong. I’m keeping my stuff on cooldown as much as possible, I’m not breaking my Mastery (maybe once now and then on accident) but still. I feel like I’m doing something super fundamentally wrong. And I don’t know what it is. Do better weapons make a huge difference? They are only 207s. I’m trying here but I don’t know whats wrong…

Helps if I post on my Monk >_>

i mean… you should be doing awesome dmg just for pve situations take off chi and use tiger, and use white tiger for pve ascension is not the best, power flask and two shadow oils for your weapons if your doing raid or high tier mythics your loadout is honestly just fine for most pve situations too karma you can use to benefit you for damage so put it on the target and stand in the dmg of a boss and you will see a boost most pve situation you wont need your ring so swap that out for the 100% dmg reduction. Kyrian, SEF, Xuen all at once and just start blasting your damage for me its, Tiger palm, rising sun, white tiger, fist of fury, whirling dragon to rising sun kick again also with kyrian your black out kick doesnt really have a chi spend so you can use that over and over to refresh the cooldown on your rising sun and fist of fury and follow back into that

also another thing i remembered when you have things up like fist of fury or whirling dragon kick or even spinning crane when it pops for 200% damage make sure your SEF is out for those because they benefit 40% of the damage dealt so technically thats 40% of 200% from that spinning crane and if you have 6 stacks on spinning crane when that procs it does a ton of dmg

Curious, how much dps are you pulling?

Most single target fights? Around 3.5k. Most AoE fights? Probably the same, or slightly more. I’m always around 1.5k-3k lower than most top parses of my ilvl.

if your interested take a look at peakofserenity its a really good informational site on wind walkers with some really good advice. ive found it to be helpful from time to time

I can help out a bit with some changes.

For starters use peak of serenity as a starter guide, but put talents that you feel comfortable with; Anyways here are my tips

1.) I know cookie cutter trees say go with “Chi burst” , but try out “Eye of the tiger instead”. Why? Because it’s constant dot damage even in fights you have to move to do mechanics you are still getting dps on the boss try it out it helps me

2.) 30 is personal preference but i would try without “fist of the white tiger”, I like Ascension because it gives back energy faster and most of the time keeps your rotation flowing.

3.) if you see that chi isn’t coming back fast enough, that’s when I throw in an “expel harm” to do fists of fury again instead of waiting for other skills to come back

4.) Get rid of dance of chi ji for single target. “hit combo” is better for single target and still does extremely well as AoE also.

5.) Rotation is key on open

Do phantom fire potion on sec 1 before boss pull then pop , have 2 shadowcore oils one for each weapon

Xuen, weapons of order (kyrian), storm eart and fire, “on use trinket popped” then rotation to get into:

tiger palm X2, fists of fury, tiger palm, rising sun kick, whirling dragon punch

From there, tiger palm, blackout kick, until rising sun kick, whirling dragon punch

always prioritize though fists of fury as the #1 skill over everything else

Fists of fury > rising sun kick> whirling dragon punch

Try these out as test in a mythic dungeon or raid and report back if your dps spikes. Hope this helps you out.

Last pointer, try sim or play around with trinkets swapping them out for otherones. Look at WoWhead for highest single target trinkets and play around getting all those different ones. That’s what I do also. Maybe take out the stat one for another as a test to see if your dps spikes to 3k or 4k single target. Your memory of past sins is what I have for single target, best one IMO if others have it. From there try to get hateful chain, or stone legion generals trinket. Other good ones for melee would be phial of putrefication or Bottled flayedwin toxin.

With WW you want to prioritize Versatility and mastery stats after agility.

Key for WW is mastery of hit combo; where if you don’t press the same skill twice , your dps shoots higher. The only time I hit the same skill twice is on open sometimes for X2 tiger palm to start fists of fury. From there, never hit the same skill twice.

so if for example blackout kick is up again faster than all other skills avoid it, wait for the next closest refreshed high hitting skill. Lastly, I don’t use spinning crane kick for single target fights. I only use it for mythics + in pack groups for aoe.

I’d love to swap trinkets. Sadly, those are the only DPS ones I have. My loot luck has been incredibly lackluster.

In response to Jezok, if it helps…

  1. I usually run burst just for the out of combat free chi cast on pull. But I may go for the simplicity of no extra skill for awhile, see how it pans out.

  2. I agree it is personal preference. I use Ascension in PvP, and I do like it. So maybe I should just run with it in PvE. I know the skills are all super close together in terms of output. So its just personal preference.

  3. I usually use Expel on cooldown, for the heal and for the chi. (Unless I dont need it, obviously)

  4. I use Chi-ji on fights that don’t have 1 target. All else, is Hit Combo. Got that already.

  5. I know the opener (aside from questioning the x2 tiger palm but it doesnt really hit hard anyways), but I thought sharpening stones were superior for Monks vs the oils? Maybe I read guides wrong, but I thought that was the case. I’ll have to double check.

As for the rest of…yea, I know a lot about Monks stats, rotation, gear, talents, etc. I’ve watched countless videos. But I’m just baffled by the damage some of these people are pulling on Warcraftlogs. I’ve had great parses on my Warrior at the start of Nathria (which I’m sure is normal, but still. 95% or higher, some 99%s I believe) and I’m aware gear deprivation and being so far behind isn’t helping, I still just don’t understand.

I think I’ve learned a few things though. I’m gonna give it a whirl, and see what happens.

Give it a try and see if it boosts your dps, if not you just stick with what you been doing.

I’ve been smashing blackout kick over and over (breaking mastery) during Weapon’s of Order to fire off as many Fists of Fury as possible. Supplement with a Expel Harm or Fists of the White Tiger as needed for Chi to fire off more Blackout Kicks. I can normally get two FF off per SEF, and use two SEF’s on pull for a nice healthy boom spike each fight. I can get 3 FF’s in a SEF during Lust if I time it right. Once Lust and SEF is used, back to normal rotation.

Even I know that’s an awful idea. In PvP, it works fine. But its a gigantic DPS loss.

Another big part of dps is knowing when to use your buttons. Take sludgefist for example. If you use everything on pull, you will have your buttons up for the 2nd and 4th pillar as well.
So I’ll save my SEF ‘s second charge for pillars 1&2 to get the extra 100% damage.

On sire saving WDP and SCK procs (if able) for when adds spawn in phase one for massive dps increase.

Same things can be done with blood council’s haste buff. and making sure you have CD’s for add spawns on Sun kings.

Just knowing when to press your buttons will increase you dps a fair amount.

i think this is only good when you take serenity, and thats because the burst damage from swapping between black out kick and rising sun kick is really quick (no chi cost and reduced cooldown). Try that out with invokers delight, its quiet the burst window.

It be cool to see how your main looks like in terms of stat allocation and talent so we can further see, but I would say 80% of your success will come from knowing when to use your cooldowns during fights, every fight will be a bit different for it and experience will be your best teacher.

Its not a very hard rotation and theres a lot of room for mistakes compared to other specs, as long as you stack versatility and run invokers and proper talents you should be doing okay.

I had this issue, and I did some research and switched up my rotation! Generate enough CHI and you will one do major damage! Do Expel Harm first, chi burst, fist of the white tiger, Xuen, SWF or as I call it, my mini me, Fae Stomp, rising sun kick, tiger palm. Keep up expel harm on CD… I swear i’ve been a happy DPS maniac woman since! I am loving this rotation… ALSO if in Toghast always pick the power that adds to your total health… stack that, with the touch of death with a shorter CD and then the touch death power that makes 5 additional targets nearby die… I was just walking through touch of deathing everyone like mowing the lawn!! WW Monk is THE best for Torghast.
