Windows 11 and WoW

It’s for windows too. Since system files are stored on the boot drive the idea is to get them loaded quickly. However if you want to use DirectStorage (not yet available, but coming soon™) you need an M.2 drive. However DirectStorage is not W11 exclusive.

I mean you can… but your experience will be significantly compromised.

My main rig is running a 3700x, so I decided to wait until they update the Ryzen issues. My 2nd rig has an i5-4570, and from what I’ve seen in the bios, there’s no option for even tpm 1.2.

Damn shame because I was hoping I could try it out on a machine that’s not my main and see how I feel about it. Really thought a PC from 6 years ago would fall under the 1.2 umbrella, but I guess not.

Just a warning, don’t try to use Linux if you enjoy any game that uses external anti-cheat software like EAC, it won’t work.

Stuck with windows a bit more.

That’s not always an issue anymore.

I’m glad they’re working on it, it’s been a thorn in linux gamings side for a long time.

Lutris works so good

It’s still amusing to me that the best way to target linux for gaming is to target Proton… e.g. target windows and let proton do the heavy lifting of compatibility. It’s so sad.

Yeah it’s sad that it was flagged for go. Overall the damn thing limited by platter, 8gb ram, 1050, a 8700 runs like a dog vs a laptop I have that has ssd, intel 530, 16 GB, and 6820hq (which isn’t cleared for W11).

Both are on 19043.1266, and had been sfc’d, dism’d (and rebased), plus defragged/trimmed. Plus all most recent bios and drivers.

Windows 11 doesn’t appear to officially support anything below 8th gen intel.

There’s a way to bypass TPM requirements, but you’ll probably be stuck with whatever version of 11 you install.

I mean, you could just throw an SSD in it, they’re not very expensive anymore.

Poor analogies are poor.

Yeah, I should get around to it (looking at the computer right now).

But it’s not my main desktop so no rush. Besides gonna let the upgrade junkies clear the minefield first. Will think about upgrading anything maybe around February/March. Which should fit fine around 9.2 launch.

I just can’t even imagine using a PC without one anymore haha.

The primary difference between Win10 and Win11 is they made the interface more pretty and they greatly increased the amount tracking of everything you do. If you’re the sort of person who spends most of your time looking at the start menu or your desktop background and care nothing about your privacy, then Win11 is for you. If gaming and productivity are your primary uses for your computer then I would advise not being a sucker early adopter and staying with Win10 at least until Win11 gets it’s first round of patches.

You won’t see any differences in gaming afaik. All the benchmarks I’ve seen show exactly ZERO performance improvements.

Well, to be fair… Google, Apple, Facebook etc all track me anyway. Windows has been doing similar for a while now too. If the government wants to know that I run around my town in a 50 mile radius in the middle of nowhere and that’s about it, then so be it.

I hope they enjoyed my binge watching of Creepshow!

When I saw what Windows 11 was going to be I made it a priority to see if macOS or Linux were good alternatives. I started out by converting an Apple cheese grater to Big Sur and played around with it for awhile. Then Apple came out with their “We’re going to be looking at all your files all the time to make sure you’re not a bad person” and suddenly my goal became looking to see if Linux was a good alternative.

Turns out, modern Linux is really bloody good, runs Warcraft, runs FFXIV, runs pretty much everything I need and it does all that without looking over my shoulder and reporting my movements to marketing drones. As for Google, Apple, FB and the rest - I ditched them long ago and have active blockers against their prolific tracking.

I know there is an entire generation out there today who have been brought up under surveillance and don’t care, and that’s fine, they have more choices. But I personally don’t like uninvited strangers in my home any more than I want some creep watching me sleep at night.

I’m not part of that generation. I just don’t care. I’m old, I’ve got more important things to concern myself with than whether someone knows what’s on my computer. I’ve got nothing to hide.

But what about all the bodies in your basement?

Most of us have nothing to hide, but that’s not an invitation to be tracked and cataloged for marketing purposes or worse. The fact is, the world is full of bad folks and I’d rather they not be allowed to stalk me. And let’s face it, slapping a big tech company name on the practice doesn’t make it anything less than “digital stalking”.

But hey, that’s my own opinion. I offer it freely because that’s all it’s worth
