Will we ever see a WoW Linux client?

On the gaming front. There is no scripting involved… it’s literally downloading steam and play just like on windows… or download lutris (or bottles) and play

Why did you add the year to your condescending rhetorical question?

It’s actually counter to the point you’re making. Linux has gotten better for gaming as time has gone on, not worse lol

As others have jumped to point out, valve is pushing hard to make SteamOS a direct competitor to windows for those who use their computer for just gaming, and they are doing a pretty amazing job it too. You should have a look once you get out from under your rock

I could be wrong but i dont think you can play any new games on Linux… I dont think it even has support for new video cards

You’re absolutely wrong, sorry to say.

There’s a number of replies here that seem to reflect a mentality that Linux is some obscure command-line based operating system for nerds. Perhaps that was once true.

The reality is that Linux is simply an underlying operating system which drives many of the devices we us today such as mobile phones and even some smart tv products.

MacOS and Android and even IOS share some heritage and similarities with Linux.

SteamOS is a relatively new operating system by valve which the Steam Deck “console” uses.

Installing games on a steam deck is actually much simpler than on Windows. There is no need to install drivers or update them, there is certainly no “learning scripting to play a game” as someone mentioned. It’s simply turn on the device and login to steam and your games are just there, ready to play without a command prompt in sight.

I suspect (and hope) this thread will age well in the coming years when we see more and more devices running steamOS in place of windows, and gamers will be able to “just install and play” games without having to endure driver updates, windows updates, viruses and trojans, operation system resource overheads and restrictions.

Time will tell, I’m interested to re-visit this topic in one or two years when people start to (en masse) play games like Diablo, WoW and Overwatch 2 on their Linux devices.

Who else would be using it really, i cant see an average person using linux over windows or mac os

Anyone who owns a steam deck or any future device which will run SteamOS.

You clearly didn’t take the time to read my entire comment and just chopped out a choice sentence.

My 12 year old niece plays WoW on a Steam Deck and I wouldn’t exactly call her a nerd.

no because windows exists thats about it.

Is it her PC or you just let her use it lmao

My gf and I played D3 together, she had a Mac. About 6mon-1 year after release, it stopped working. Was super annoying at the time, but we just played other things.

But I had read that Blizzard DID work on this problem-- and resolved it.

I just had her login about 3 weeks ago, and D3 works!

And unless I’m mistaken, D4 will have a Mac client. Am I wrong about this?

She plays WoW on her Mac. That has always worked.

So I’m curious where this statement of “Blizzard is abandoning Macs” is coming from. They have been a standout in the gaming community for their support for Macs. And that bump in the road for D3 is the only thing in the entire history of Blizzard as a company that they seemed to have dropped the ball – and they RESOLVED THAT.

So… what do you mean?

I do believe your GF is outta luck

OW and OW2, no mac support
D IV no mac support
DII: Resurrect no mac support

WoW mac support is a second class citizen.

Metal sucks compared to directx, so it’s probably a major problem.

Gotta be honest, I never even looked. I just assumed that since they’ve always supported Mac, that D4 would have a Mac client. wow… that’s crazy. I didn’t even know that OW didn’t have a Mac client (she didn’t play that so I’d never know).

I don’t know enough to say, but for platforms it lists the consoles and then “Battlenet.” When you click “Battlenet” it says “Windows.”

So… can’t you run Windows on a Mac? Is that a work-around?

Yea, you can run windows on mac through a program called Bootcamp

Is that Blizzard’s “unofficial-official” solution?

Why develop for a totally unique platform (Mac), when they can just run Windows and run the Windows client?

I mean… if it WORKS, that certainly seems like the obvious solution to me.

Eh, it’s more complicated than that honestly.

Mac and windows use completely different graphics APIs, Windows with Directx and Mac with METAL, and METAL is lacking compared to directx.

Though they could switch fully to Vulkan which both CAN use, but Vulkan support was still lacking on Mac last time I checked.

It’s just a matter of providing a good experience, and METAL doesn’t, it lacks major features from DX12

I said with their newer games. Diablo III is a decade old.

  • Overwatch does not have a Mac client.
  • Heroes of the Storm never had a Mac client.
  • Diablo Immortal isn’t available on the Mac even though it is available on iPad and that build will run on Apple Silicon Macs. My iPad and Mac are actually using the same M1 processor.
  • The Diablo IV website lists windows, Xbox and PlayStation as supported platforms. Nothing about Macs.

Seems like they are abandoning Mac on newer games.

No.

Fair. But it’s still a subjective term.

In a series that has 4 installments, it’s not hard to argue that 1-2 are “old” and 3-4 are “new.”

I’m not arguing semantics with you though. Thanks for the info. Because I know she is already thinking about playing D4 and, again, we both just assumed there was a Mac client. I never even looked to see there wasn’t.

if the sale to Microsoft closes successfully, then it’s basically going to come down to whatever direction Microsoft wants to go with their games platforms in the future and whatever direction that is, it will almost certainly be one they feel they can control.

Hopefully, blizzard games on gamepass /chefkiss (not saying wow would be, but everything else likely would)

Can you play WoW on proton linux?

As for the other convo in this thread, most game companies are entirely ditching OSX because they’ve moved onto Apple CPUs instead of Intel. Diablo IV on Mac was never going to happen, and it’s not “Blizzard’s fault” that they’re ditching Apple. Even if all of these rich companies suck bawls, Apple is using their own silicon now so consider it an even more dead gaming platform than ever.
