Old talent trees, new talent trees, it doesn’t matter, both have a single target and a aoe cookie cutter build. Sure old trees you could take more wrong choices but there was and is always a best build for whatever content fight you are doing, acting like there isn’t is just ignorance. And as we have seen with the vast majority of players covenant choices most take whatever is bis.
This. I’m fine with the talents we choose from now. They are far more impactful and you can still change them around however you like.
i would love to see also source management back like mana or rage
Way back in vanilla, there was a guy on the hunter board that swore by his melee hunter build.
Not the SV build that you took when you hit a certain hit and crit level post-MC, the melee and trap talents - although I can’t remember if he had Lacerate or not. Claimed all the time how he owned in PvP because people were so shocked at what he was doing. I kind of wondered if he had some success because they were dying laughing on their keyboards.
Why do I feel as if you don’t remember talent trees or are misremembering them? Maybe our experiences were drastically different and you’re remembering just fine!?
Never once did anyone ever say to me that they liked paying for playing with their trees. Everyone just repeated that there was a right tree build or a noob build. Cookie cutter builds, but in talent tree form.
Might be a me thing though.
Isn’t it almost 50/50? Trees -> classic, tbc, world, cata. Current -> mop, wod, legion, bfa (well, and now).
I also highly doubt we’ll go back to trees. I do want my legendary weapons back, though xD.
Talent trees were vastly superior and if blizzard actually invested in doing work on talent trees more often than they did it could have been a very interesting system
Rogues in BC have like 5 different spec options but due to them never doing any changes really to the tree a lot of them were left behind the meta and never used, if updated could have looked really good
Rogues in BC could have their deep sub build, SF hemo, mutilate, HARP spec and what ever else they could have come up with.
Realistically talent trees suit retail better than they do classic because there is a lot more solo content
Current talent trees suck toes
Well we’re in year 16 of the game and the talent trees lasted for little less than 8.
We won’t see the old talent trees because the combat has been reduced to a series of
If/Then Boolean values. (For better or worse.)
No room for percentages and incrementalism in it.
I really wish they would return, along with cross-speccing. I don’t get the mentality that if a build doesn’t fit a major content type it shouldn’t exist… people do things other than raid/M+/PvP.
It’d also give me a reason to use dual spec again. On my mage I just stay fire all the time but back in WotLK/Cata I’d use one of the slots for an elite soloing spec or old dungeon running spec.
Probably not. There really isn’t any experimentation to be had when sims do all the work now. Talent trees or not, there will only be the acceptable build and the “wrong” build.
Not under this dev team.
I hope not.
Ugh.
You know how fun my mage was in BC when I ran out of mana, mana gem was on CD, and evocate was on CD? None. Wheee wanding while I wait for mana to actually play again.
No. This is why I swapped to a warlock in BC
I like talent trees. The talent trees we had were utter garbage though. Advocating for a return to that is dumb to me and just a “grrr changes, go back to the good ole days!!!” which weren’t good because of talent trees at all.
If we’re talking something like Diablo 2’s trees where all your active abilities were in talent trees, and synergies and all of that? I’m totally on board for that kind of system!
But returning to 90% filler fluff trees? Yeah hard pass there.
The talent trees we have now are half filled with pruned abilities we USE to have baseline that are basically always chosen now for 1 streamlined build, with the other half of the talents being trash/poorly designed
I’d like a talent tree like the days of old, but with actually interesting, or gameplay style changing talents instead of just percentage increases. Would be great if you could make viable hybrid talent trees.
I feel like if old Blizzard struggled with this, new Blizzard has no chance.
Agreed. I like making talent suggests for others
But on the other hand, the way it is now where several specs don’t even use mana except as utility limiters doesn’t really feel fun either. Would be better to just give utility abilities charges + cooldowns and get rid of the mana bar entirely for those specs.
The only thing to be missed about the old talent trees was the sense of progression they provided during leveling. That piece is certainly missing.
But otherwise the load out talents fit better with the modern iteration of game and generally are just superior. If you want minor the old experience then adding tertiary stats i between level gaps would be a happy medium
Sure, the old talent trees allowed for a few fun/interesting builds like:
- shockadin
- Soul link/siphon life warlocks
- Disc priests with shadow form
-etc…
but the old system isn’t really a whole lot better than what we currently have, as both have
- talent(s) that you absolutely pick no matter what (otherwise you’re literally doing it wrong)
- talent(s) that you absolutely pick no matter what for specific content (pve vs. pve)
etc…
Plus, the old trees had SO much bloat/clutter (increase parry chance 1/2/3/4/5%, as one of many examples)
