I remember seeing old screenshots of WoW and they showed everyone having some pretty decent looking armor. Will we ever get something like that back, or will we be stuck with fantasy styled weapons forever?
Pvp sets are the reward from a grade school drawing contest. Not even worth the two hours to que for the elite set.
Well, practical kinda implies realistic.
And face it, in reality there are only so many ways to make a sharp pointy thing and a tin suit.
And… where are these screenshots? Because I’ve been playing for about a decade and fancy fantasy has always been the art style that I can recall. Shoulder’s roughly the size of watermelons and helmets that make the wearer look like a demented moose have been standard since I’ve been playing, anyhow. Kinda interested in seeing this “practical” armor you speak of.
There are a few somewhat decent looking ones but I highly doubt you’ll see many like that here. I imagine this simply isn’t that kind of setting and I believe folks us are very much a minority here.
This is after all a setting that drinks Rule of Cool like a lush drinks wine; and the vast majority, from my personal experience anyway, are far too used to the exaggerated and overdesigned to find anything less just as interesting.
There is some decent stuff out there, but it is mostly green type stuff. You’ll always have to t-mog it… I seriously doubt they’ll ever do plain jane stuff for actual sets.
Only leveling greens and blues ever looked like “real” weapons lol
And that’s variable. After all, one of the earliest plate sets you can get is the Saltstone… which is also the prototypical bikini armor.

Close up the spaces.
There’s a few that I was able to scrounge up.
No gigantic shoulder-pads, simple looking designs. It all felt real, like it had impact with the swings IMO.
I hope not. If you want boring normal looking armor, go play ESO. That’s literally all there is. Basic, boring looking armor. You can’t tell the difference from a noob to a max level player because all the gear looks almost the same.
You may get your wish, though. They’ve taken class sets out completely and have been slowly replacing them with boring looking armor.
You are a green man from another planet who has a necklace that can shoot fireballs and Lazer beams as you quest through a zone that is the ocean floor but the water is being held back by a 10000 year old snake lady.
A basic looking sword would definitely make things real
The transmog from early crafting profession items looks pretty realistic and practical. I typically switch into it to level a new toon. A lot of the early gear tends to be super low resolution but some of the crafted stuff looks to have been added in CATA.
But yeah the lower level transmog items tend to be the most practical/realistic where the stuff available from Lv 60 onward tends to lean more into the more fantasical elements.
I highly doubt that a raid tier or pvp set will ever be more grounded in reality, most people expect and want something unique and distinctive. A major exception to this would be thr 7th Legion sets (i assume the honorbound sets would be similar) which look elaborate but yet realistic (minus the enormous weapons).
I’m not saying that there’s anything wrong with the aesthetic of WoW or that everything must be real, but I feel like my weapons have more impact when it looks like something a giant green alien rage monster could actually swing.
Imagine that.
Fantasy styled weapons in a fantasy game.
Who would have thunk it.
I disagree. There are a ton of really nice and unique looking sets in that game, and some of them are semi-realistic.
When it was first launched though? Yeah, the armor was pretty bad. They’ve added aome awesome stuff with the expansions though.
WoW armor is mostly overdesigned and meh… though some of my favorite fantasy sets do come from WoW.
Because being practical looking automatically equates to being boring, apparently.
They took away class sets away and have consistently been adding terrible looking “sets” for each armor type instead that literally look like they belong in vanilla. Sorry, you’re wrong.
Settle down there, Drougen.
This isn’t something one can be wrong or right about. It’s a subjective thing. lol
I would like some new well textured and high quality modeled but less glowy flashy gear if thats what you mean. I kind of like the way the armor on Alliance side was going in that respect. However I wouldnt want those to be dungeon or raid sets, those should be more flashy and unique to the content or monsters being killed. I’ve noticed some grey items look good, but for whatever reason arent in transmog. THATS what they need to fix, imo.
Yup and in my opinion, you’re wrong. I think you’re the one who needs to be settled.
Have a beer from ol’ Viking Santa. That was pretty funny.
