I’m thinking of getting a Mac, I dont really game much other than WOW, XIV, and some Heroes of the Storm.
Should this Macbook Pro be able to run wow “well”?
- 2.3GHz 8‑core 9th‑generation Intel Core i9 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.8GHz
- 16GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory
- AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 4GB of GDDR6 memory
I’m trying to figure out how much better the 5500M vs the 5300M actually is.
If the difference is small enough, should I just go for the 5300M and save some money?
Also, does the change from Intel to ARM jeopardize WOW running on this Macbook in the future?
I have the same machine.
Get the 5500M, it’s worth it.
WoW runs amazingly well on it.

can you give me an idea on what kind of performance you are getting? Debating on going this route. I have a 13" 2020 MBP and can run just OK. Although the integrated graphics suck. Its also an i5… So not sure if that comes into play.
I was debating on using an EGPU my friend has but may return this and get a larger 16" . I did want portability when I was out of town though… I really only play classic but curious how you are doing in retail. Is this full MacBook resolution with max graphics?
I’m using custom settings to maintain a locked 60fps in retail.
Most things are turned up high, but I turn AO off and use 50% render scale. The 50% render scale is mainly to keep temps low so the GPU doesn’t throttle. It’ll actually run happily at 60fps for at while at 100%, but will then throttle. If you manually set fans to run at max you could probably get away with 100%, but it would be insanely loud.
If you did want to go down the 16" route and really wanted to run everything at max, the 5600 may be a better option if you can afford it. But if you’re mainly looking at classic, you could get more milage out of the 5500.
If you’re not worried about portability, you could just go with an egpu, but the reason I got the 16" in the first place is because the laptop is mainly for work when I’m on the road, and it happens to run WoW very well as a bonus.
I would expect that laptop to run WoW very well. When traveling I play WoW classic on a Vega 20 i9 from 2019. I have zero issues and play open world at 3 or 4 settings with 60-70% display scaling and it looks fine. For raiding while traveling I dial it up a bit as it can handle more gfx (though notably AQ40 is more taxing and I keep it on 4 for that to max the 60FPS and reduce heat - it COULD handle more).
At home I use an eGPU (RX 5700 XT) and it is spectacular. I use a 1440p 144hz monitor and it is awesome on 10/10 settings (except SSAO which pegs the GPU clock if i keep it on).
It’s an exceptional experience.
Hi - do you know if the 5700xt EGPU would work well for a MBP 2020 13 inch base edition?
