Didn’t catch this, just wondering if they will wipe characters before launching in August?
Why wouldn’t they? It’s a beta, not early access.
These days its common to NOT wipe in a beta because of early access…
The realms that are being played on for beta will not be the realms for launch. Consider them isolated realms that will be shut down after beta.
If it’s anything other than what I described, I’d be shocked.
I would imagine that as daft as blizzard is at interacting and reading their community that they will have the sense to realize that after all of the drama with beta invites allowing these same players that have been the focus of quite alot of hate to keep their characters prior to launch that it would cause alot more drama then they really would be looking for.
Blizzard has always wiped/shut down betas upon release of the actual game.
Thanks, this makes sense. I hope it is so.
Blizzard also never required active sub/game time to participate in beta…

Yeah that wouldn’t cause a
storm or anything.
If they don’t wipe there’s no point in playing it since the people in beta got a lead and that pretty much screws over a lot of people on pvp servers with ganking/griefing.
This is completely untrue, and I don’t know where you got that information. Early Access is generally when anyone can pay for access to the game with a slight time advantage, like a one week headstart.
Beta is for testing and debugging, and I have never seen a single mmo maintain data (like characters) beyond the beta. That would make an mmo DOA. Who would want to join a game where other players have a 30+ level advantage?
I challenge you to point out any mmorpg that let players keep beta characters from a limited closed beta and is still in business.
They’ve also always given beta keys to people who weren’t subbed. /shrug
Sure, but they won’t shoot themselves in the foot. Even smaller indie games are smart enough to know that not wiping beta would be their death. A seasoned company like Blizzard with the 4th longest running subscription mmo won’t make that mistake.
ARE YOU SURE? I mean this is blizztard we are talking about.
They made WoD.
Edit: i forgot this in my post.
Don’t get me wrong. They can break a game like there’s no tomorrow. They still know how to money grab though, and not wiping a beta would kill the money grab. Blizzard loves money…
The Beta servers are part of the PTR servers. What happens in Beta stays in Beta.
The only thing they are doing is opening up the option to reserve three character names a couple weeks before launch. Those are not going to be wiped.
Someone getting to level 60 in the Beta will have to start at level one like everyone else.
I disagree. And I have that information first hand. When a game launches in pre-alpha, alpha in an early access phase it is routine now when they finally reach a ‘Beta’ that many will not wipe servers, progression. This is done to retain the players they have accumulated in the early phases.
I understand your perspective from a true Closed Beta, but sadly betas are becoming a thing of the past. On steam the first mmorpg that carried over progression that comes to mind is Gloria Victis.
Not with Blizzard.
The thing is this isn’t early access beta going on, this is closed beta. Early access beta is when you either pay or pledge or donate to a some kind of help us out package and based upon what you given you get certain perks one of them for some is called early access beta. This is open to the public and anyone can join if they are willing to front the requirements to join, when this is the case usually they allow the char to process when final product launch hit.
Closed beta is and have always been exclusively char made during that time and only used during that time then wiped when the beta servers are shut down. Close beta is invite only and as practice games wont shot themselves in the foot by allowing only a few hand picked to get an advantage. In a game like wow where you do have to pay to play it would actually hurt then help to allow that.
Ya no, its a fresh start once the servers go live. Could you imagine starting up fresh only to have the influencers and streamers at max level controlling most aspects of the economy in the first phase or two? That would be a legit nightmare for progressing/accolades.
