Will there be downtime before SL launches?

I didn’t see a notice about scheduled downtime today. How will they apply the expansion without bringing the servers down?

I believe we’ve already downloaded it (u less you have the physical disc deluxe edition), so it should be a smooth transition.

interesting. Curious to see how this goes. So if you are on at 6pm EST you will just get a new quest to start the expac?

There isn’t. The first quest will be given out automatically in real time. You’ll be online in game and it’ll just appear from the air. That’s all that happens now, no relogs needed.

Theyll just flip a switch and it’ll be either auto pushed to your quest log or appear at a quest giver in front of Grommash Hold or Stormwind Keep.

We already have the expansion, once launch time hits the game is programmed to proc your quest

You can try to log in early and the new expansion quest will pop right up at the time.

Expectations for Shadowlands Launch - Community / General Discussion - World of Warcraft Forums (blizzard.com)

Here you go. Servers should be up until they get restarted tomorrow morning barring the unforeseen.

I don’t foresee any unforeseen problems…

…oh wait…

Trust me, I EXPECT they will go up in flames. I’ve got a bag of marshmallows to share. If you’re prepared for the worst all surprises are pleasant. I’m going to be on more for the community then actually accomplishing anything of importance today/tonight.

Ever since at least MoP, the expansion launches “live” in game without any downtime for a patch or even the need to relog or restart the game. To the extent patching was required, that happened last week during the past Tuesday’s maintenance. The upcoming maintenance that is scheduled is for an hour tomorrow/Tuesday morning.

At the appointed time in your region/time zone, there will be an announcement in game in yellow text in chat saying something like “Welcome to the Shadowlands!”

Then a quest will pop up, you accept it, and head out to where the quest tells you to go to get started.

Note that in the past, the actual start time is not exactly at the official launch time of 3:00 PST. It varies by server, but my experience has been that the launch actually happened 10-20 minutes before the actual launch time, so you may want to log in a little early.

Also, common launch day issues include queues on higher population servers, and sometimes some DDOS attacks against Blizz’s login servers, messing up people’s ability to get logged in. All the more reason to be logged in early.

Finally, make sure to take time earlier today to update your addons. Most have been updated in the last week, so avoid addon issues by getting the latest versions. Also be aware that Curseforge is transitioning from Twitch to Overwolf in a week, and once that starts, addon authors ability to update addons may be impacted, so be sure to check for addon updates a couple of times in the coming days to get any bug fixes or tweaks following the expansion launch.

Good luck and have fun in the realms of death! :skull:

/moo :cow:

They might do something about the plague before we enter a new questing experience. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see atleast a server reset and removal of the plague debuffs.
