Someone explain crafting to me in DF. I dabbled in it but nothing serious.
There’s another post regarding the requirement of profession tables and how important crafting is. I played the entire expansion without any real experience in crafting or receiving crafted items.
Is this something that I need to be a better player? If so, where do I even start…

It’s way too late for that. But check wowhead. TWW will have the same system

Yep, I think I’ve got that part down. Thank you though.

For most of DF, most BiS builds used at least 2 pieces of crafted gear with embellishments.
So yes, participating in crafting by either making stuff yourself or getting someone else to make you gear would make you a better player by increasing your potential DPS output…but depending on what content you do, it is definitely not required.

TWW will simplify the feature anyways just wait until then to dabble into it.

Since there’s not really a catch-up mechanic for Knowledge right now, I’d suggest not bothering about crafting. Wait a couple months until everyone gets to start fresh in the next expansion.
But a tl;dr is -
You get Knowledge points (talent points) to spend on the trees to learn the recipes and improvements that you want. You can eventually fill out all of the trees, but it takes a very long time…so it’s best to find something that you’re interested in right away (like crafting a specific type of weapon, or a Wormhole Generator, etc) and invest points towards that goal. Then branch out from there.
You get Knowledge points whenever you craft something for the first time, and there are some quests, rep/renown items, and weekly item drops that award them as well.

It’s honestly not worth worrying about it now; there simply isn’t enough time left in the expansion to get anywhere.
That having been said, crafting can be very beneficial for some of the items (Alchemy can be very good with it’s ability to provide a plethora of side benefits to your flasks and elixirs).

Crafting in DF is largely a time sink. While some things are kinda cool and interesting about it, that time sink killed any desire I had to go further into it.

People in this thread are ignoring the other half of the equation, here:
You don’t have to be a crafter to have others make crafted items for you.
That’s the groundbreaking feature of Dragonflight crafting.

Anyone else looking forward to another botched launch where people are able to get multiple knowledge points unintendedly? Or having items like Lariat where you make literal millions for getting lucky on having it early all while doing nothing about the recipe drop the entire expac? lol.
Beta is full of profession mains looking for exploits

The answer is no. Anything provided by crafting you can obtain by having someone make it for you, provided you have money (for materials typically).
Professions can also make you a much richer player, but that’s another discussion entirely. That said, there will likely be wowhead guides for that up soon if they arent already up.

it’s basically like this:
you can make BoP items for other people, with their mats or your mats. Through the table.
they send you an order, you complete the order for them. They get the item, you keep any procced bonus materials and their tip/comission.
not everyone has to craft. you can go double-gathering - or skip professions entirely.
same as always.

It’s largely irrelevant.
This, on the other hand, was a major error by Blizzard.
I used to love making stuff. This is the first expansion that I don’t plan on capping out.
If I were you, I would stick to gathering professions and sell the proceeds.

professions are a time and gold sink.
anything that can be crafted can be matched through PvE/PvE content.
dont get your hopes up that you can put in time gathering items and sell them for a profit because you’ll only spend countless hours farming for very little return. auction house market are dominated and controlled by the players with the most gold or bots.
save yourself time and headache and gold and just dont engage in professions unless its something you want to do just as a fun “off to the side” thing.
going for the achievements might be alright but its a 10000% unrecoverable gold sink.
and dont let anyone tell you different.

Gathering isn’t the best past the initial xpac rush for materials, but DF was certainly better than most thanks to awakened elements retaining quite a bit of value throughout the xpac and being able to farm them consistently from their themed nodes.
Identifying valuable rank 3 recipes for your profession and using illustrious insight to guarantee procs for a solid mark-up has also been a consistent staple throughout the xpac and was a really great way to value a time-gated resource.
No use for artisan’s mettle on a double gatherer sucks bad though.

I wish that I’d gotten the embellishment to keep my food buff through death. I had lots of chances but skipped it.
There are so many guides out there, I think that doing a little research pays off. For me, I zeroed in on the engineering wyrmhole generator. I’ve been very satisfied, and my new alts have piggy-backed on it so they can jump to the Forgotten Isle or the Caverns. Quality of life, baby.
