Amazons new world is set to have its preview tomorrow; I for one am very excited to play this again
Say what you will about the game but the graphics are mind blowing for an MMO
Ashes of creation is also hanging around set to release hopefully before I die of old age and they seem to be making some pretty outlandish systems
Now whilst I don’t believe they will kill WoW in any capacity I’m hoping they will have a big enough draw to compete and force WoW to shake things up a bit
I’d love to see WoW made with the graphics of new world; Azeroth is a beautiful place and if I could see it in a world that would make my computer almost set on fire would be a glorious sight to behold
I seriously agree that WoW has one of the best art styles but after getting hands on with new world I was completely blown away at how pretty everything looked
After I logged back into WoW it was like going from GTA5 to crash bandicoot on PS1
Blizzard has a very pixar-esque aesthetic to their games that I vastly prefer over hyper realism. This kind of art styles ages way better and improves easier.
While hyper realistic graphics become void and pretty awful as each new game generation passes.
I think New World is trying that but it is taking a lot of similarities from the old Star War Galaxies before SOE and LA shot themselves in foot byt trying to outthink themselves. Amazon Gaming definitely has the financial backing to compete against any other Gaming Developer. I am curious to see how that one plays out.
Innovation costs money, and does not guarantee a return on investment.
Multi-million dollar companies don’t like to gamble, that’s how they stay multi-million dollar companies (and why we get prequels, sequels, reboots and remakes of everything from the last 30 years). WoW is a steady and reliable source of income for ActiBlizz, which is probably the only reason it hasn’t been unceremoniously shut down and gutted. That reliability comes from players like us, who just keep paying for it month after month, year after year, regardless of what playing it is actually like.
So, no, I don’t see anything drastically overhauling WoW any time soon. At most, if some other game becomes wildly successful, they may attempt to copy that game before giving up and pulling the plug (remember Star Wars Galaxies?).
I also haven’t seen any upcoming MMOs that will really dent WoW much.
People like to hype up Ashes of Creation and all these other massive mega MMOs coming out, but none of them have an even close to comparable end game WoW does.
Only way you’re killing WoW is if you draw away its endgame community, and I haven’t seen a single MMO do that in a meaningful way.
I think you need to define “new graphics” here, because World of Warcraft has pushed out better graphics with every expansion. In my opinion, I think its art direction triumphs over most MMOs.
FFXIV is a pretty game, but it doesn’t have the allure WoW has.
