Will next gen MMOs inspire innovation in WoW

A few new games coming up on the horizon

Amazons new world is set to have its preview tomorrow; I for one am very excited to play this again
Say what you will about the game but the graphics are mind blowing for an MMO

Ashes of creation is also hanging around set to release hopefully before I die of old age and they seem to be making some pretty outlandish systems

Now whilst I don’t believe they will kill WoW in any capacity I’m hoping they will have a big enough draw to compete and force WoW to shake things up a bit

I’d love to see WoW made with the graphics of new world; Azeroth is a beautiful place and if I could see it in a world that would make my computer almost set on fire would be a glorious sight to behold

I think this very specific desire is what kills most games.

It’s superficial and shallow. Graphics don’t make great games. Just something pretty to look at.

WoW has largely enjoyed its longevity because it hasn’t put graphics first.

Look man that might be true but if they just whacked some dank graphics into the game I wouldn’t complain

If you can hit both nails on the head you got a banger

Also I am aware WoW is good because you can play it on your microwave

Probably not.

Blizzard Devs seem rather disconnected from the playerbase and market around them, either out of a lack of caring or just ignorance.

Plus people buy WoW on the basis of it being WoW. No need to improve or innovate your game if you know people are gonna buy it if you don’t.

I think those games would seriously have to be god gift to mmos in order to pull enough people to make blizzard sweat enough to rehire the QA team

Yet alone try to do some cool stuff

One can hope though

I’d love to see WoW keep its throne for being the best and not just for being WoW

The reason other MMOs fail so hard is because they try too hard not to be a WoW clone.

I think WoW already has dank graphics though. BfA was a flop for me but the art team presented top tier work as usual.

Shadowlands looks just as great if not better too.

WoW has style and its great that it can look that cool and not require top of the line computers to experience.

I seriously agree that WoW has one of the best art styles but after getting hands on with new world I was completely blown away at how pretty everything looked

After I logged back into WoW it was like going from GTA5 to crash bandicoot on PS1

I agree.

Blizzard has a very pixar-esque aesthetic to their games that I vastly prefer over hyper realism. This kind of art styles ages way better and improves easier.

While hyper realistic graphics become void and pretty awful as each new game generation passes.

I did agree with this until I saw the potential of insane graphics

I think New World is trying that but it is taking a lot of similarities from the old Star War Galaxies before SOE and LA shot themselves in foot byt trying to outthink themselves. Amazon Gaming definitely has the financial backing to compete against any other Gaming Developer. I am curious to see how that one plays out.

Innovation costs money, and does not guarantee a return on investment.

Multi-million dollar companies don’t like to gamble, that’s how they stay multi-million dollar companies (and why we get prequels, sequels, reboots and remakes of everything from the last 30 years). WoW is a steady and reliable source of income for ActiBlizz, which is probably the only reason it hasn’t been unceremoniously shut down and gutted. That reliability comes from players like us, who just keep paying for it month after month, year after year, regardless of what playing it is actually like.

So, no, I don’t see anything drastically overhauling WoW any time soon. At most, if some other game becomes wildly successful, they may attempt to copy that game before giving up and pulling the plug (remember Star Wars Galaxies?).

I was there…

I remember that, it was all over the place for awhile. All I could think was, “why are you reminding people of WoW? Hype your own game, you morons!”

Rift was wow but with the legion invasion active 24/7 and way more confusing talents

I think the games that have survived this long haven’t been wow but with a new hat

Like GW2 and eso

I also haven’t seen any upcoming MMOs that will really dent WoW much.

People like to hype up Ashes of Creation and all these other massive mega MMOs coming out, but none of them have an even close to comparable end game WoW does.

Only way you’re killing WoW is if you draw away its endgame community, and I haven’t seen a single MMO do that in a meaningful way.

Too true and the one that did decided to go ahead and die; RIP wild star

It’s just tragic that in all this time no one has been able to produce a WoW alternative

Personally, I love Azeroth’s (and beyond) environments just the way they are and would appreciate it is they were not screwed up with modernization.

Environments are the main driving force behind immersion.

I think you need to define “new graphics” here, because World of Warcraft has pushed out better graphics with every expansion. In my opinion, I think its art direction triumphs over most MMOs.

FFXIV is a pretty game, but it doesn’t have the allure WoW has.

I’d just love to see the art team get hold of high tech tools so they can real let the vision in their heads unfold

I’ve seen some amazing art work on reddit of WoW locations and it makes me want to jump into the picture and look around
