It’s getting hyped right now by critics and streamers to be the next huge MMO. It’s going to be playable tonight by the select few so we’ll see if Atlas will be the one to take the throne from WoW.
Do you think WoW should be afraid?

I think that a lot of people will like it, but the Pirate theme might be a bit stale by the time it actually comes out.
We’ve had a lot of good thievery and piracy games, but one problem I see with them is they tend to be “niche” for the long-term playerbases. Pirates sell products, but they don’t seem to hold onto the huge numbers they draw in the outset.
Yes, just like every other wow killer that got released. Everyone already left to go play Fallout 76 as predicted.
Lol.
Only one way to find out.
I don’t think this is a 1:1 comparison case. WoW is a fantasy MMO. This is a pirate/naval MMO.
If it starts branching into other fantasy elements, it might have a chance, but at the moment… they’re not in a congruent section of the market, so I’d say no.
Atlas looks to be pretty good but I bet it’ll be trifled with problems like bugs and the like.
Still it’s a very good game
Ion and friends might have a pretty good chance of being the WoW killer.
beat me to it, i’m TIRED of the pirate theme
LOL.
These topics never get old.
MMO’s being a big deal is a thing of the past, WoW is and was an anomaly, a one of a kind thing. This game will kill it just like ESO, StarWars, Wildstar and every other wannabe before and after them.
I’m going to go with a big fat no.
IMO the next best MMO will be a space MMO. Big universe sandbox with storyline. Something along the lines of Elite Dangerous or No Man’s Sky. I think those games are okay but not quite there yet. Star Citizen would be a contender for that title, if it actually delivers on everything it claims it will deliver, and like… actually happens within our lifetime or something.
Wild Card (dev of Atlas) doesn’t really have a good reputaion for quality work…
Just research the issues with ARK: Survival Evolved… make sure you have some free time though, it might take a minute.
It looks gorgeous, not sure what the gameplay will be like.
I would say no, this one has a tight theme and probably won’t run well on most people’s computers. It’s more targeted to gamers who really like pirates. That said if it’s fun to play it could grow into something that sticks around.
MMORPGs might be a dying breed, but MMOs in general are far from being a thing of the past. People like playing games, and they like playing games with other people. I don’t think this will never change.
It will probably attract some people. The first-person combat style makes it a no go for me but I am sure they’ll sell some “boxes.”
Yep. Pirates are cool and all, but some number of WoW players probably play WoW partially because it’s a fantasy MMO. Similar to how nothing but a fantasy MMO could compete head-on with Everquest, nothing but a fantasy MMO can compete head-on with WoW.
Never heard of it till now: so probably not honestly.
Atlas isn’t even in the same plane as WoW. If it has any impact at all, it will be incredibly minor. I’m sure it will be a fun game for those who are into the survival genre, IE Ark, Rust, etc. But that’s a niche that WoW doesn’t even try to scratch.
Oh look! another WoW killer…
It would be amazing if there were a space MMO that was hybrid themepark/sandbox with the core story happening only on a handful of planets and the rest of the universe being purely sandbox, so for example an alliance of guilds could choose a barren planet or abandoned space station and build towns and cities and with NPCs, quests, and the works.
Yeah. Like, I’m sure there’s a sizeable community of people that play WoW that might be interested in something pirate/naval-themed as far as MMOs go, but to think it’ll pull enough of the playerbase away to sound the death knell…? Not sure about that, chief.
