Wild idea. Blizzard should just let players learn all the professions (edit: on one character)

FFXIV did it and the world didn’t end.

Just saying.

Can’t say I’d be opposed. Can’t think of any downsides to it.

No.

WoW isn’t FFXIV. If you want FFXIV, go and play that game instead.

No, this is not Star Wars

Apples and oranges. FF14 has no support for alts and also lets you take all the jobs on one character.

Eh pretty much every other game you can do all the things.
Maybe pick a single one to be a “master craftsman” or something in so you get extra bonuses. However I don’t see why you can’t have all the harvesting and crafting professions.

i’d be down. no point making alts that you never care about just to cover more profs.

I would rather they re-invent professions to were each profession can make at least one unique crafted item. Even the the gathering professions.

Which game? Old Republic, you can only learn three. I think it’s three. Goodness, I haven’t crafted in so long I forgot the limit.

I could see a warband evolution of professions where your entire warband just shares knowledge and access to the profession so you don’t have to log around to do different things and can just access it all at profession stations.

At the very least maybe warband crafting orders that auto-complete without having to log over.

I don’t agree with this. It is an RPG, you should not be able to do everything or be everything. Some people don’t like it, but going to another player for crafting is a social interaction, and the fewer of those in the game, the worse the game gets imho.

That is how they sold garrisons at least early on they said it would be able to do all professions, and see how that worked out. You could get 2 professions at most and small herb and ore farms.

Most other games are designed with it in mind. WoW isn’t. It is designed with the idea that you cannot do everything yourself. You are meant to interact with other players.

WoW is designed to be a MMO first and foremost, and in MMOs you can’t let people do things completely freely (not in this regard at least). The reason why it works in games like FFXIV is because it isn’t designed to be a MMO first (and judging by the things people have said about FFXIV, I’m convinced it was designed to be a weird mix of MMO-antithetical-but-optional).

Dark Legacy Comics is quite funny… but they do make sometimes some interesting points about the game and player behaviour. This is a very recent comic exactly about this topic, and the title of the comic is also 110% accurate:

I’m curious what other games allow you to do all crafting professions on one character outside of 14. Outside of ESO, I’ve played most of the major MMO’s and none of them allowed that.

I think it would be OK if Warcraft allowed you to have all the gathering professions, but not crafting ones. Keeping those limited per character I feel adds to the identity of the character and the game.

this is the norm in all other MMOs i play, ie New World, ESO

Blizzard doesn’t allow it and the world hasn’t ended. Perhaps there’s no correlation?

I’d argue that with the new crafting system, allowing one character to learn all the professions makes more sense now, than it did in the past.

You are playing a MMO. If you want to be anti-social, you can do so. But the game ain’t going to be designed in such a way to make that the default way to play.

So… no. In the past, with professions being less engaging and involved, then it made a miniscule amount more sense for this argument. Now that they are an actual social activity between players… yeah no, you are playing a MMO. 'nuff said.

I would agree, but they are moving towards a more solo player format now. You can do most things solo now, even raids in story mode.

Idk. I think by allowing you to specialize in one profession, it still forces player interaction.
But harvesting though, there is almost no reason to not be able to learn all 3.

And you could even apply the same principle of specializations to gathering. Pick 1 of the 3 to specialize in to get bonuses and rare mats that non specialized people can’t get.

Also if we are being completely honest. A lot of people have a bunch of alts with the different professions so they can do it all themselves right now lol. They send work orders to themselves and mail mats back and forth.

I guess all the other MMO’s that do this already aren’t real MMO’s. Honestly, you’re a bit dramatic in this thread. I have an alt for every profession which are all maxed. The social aspect as you claim is so important is quite negligible.

The people who don’t focus on professions now aren’t going to suddenly do them because you have access to them all now. All it does it cut out time leveling alts. It’s not like you need gear to max professions.
