I haven’t played much this expansion, if it looks like you should be able to get into the area, but you’re not, then yes that would be a huge negative in my book.
The game has regressed from what I’ve seen, that is true.

Let’s face it, the story is a lot closer to Plan 9 From Outer Space than it is Schindler’s List. Which isn’t surprising, after six sequels of the greatest threat to WoWkind having to be defeated and why islands and magical worlds keep popping up, it’s hard not to be.
If the only thing keeping me in this game was the story I would have left a long long time ago. Giant demon stabs the planet with a 200 story tall rock sword… Only thing missing was Tom Servo and Crow T riff’ing about it.
This statement is so contradictory that it gives you away as a really poor troll. You’re gonna need to try harder. Ask human warlocks for tips.
I’ve done barely any RP since BfA released. It’s partly because the story is so droll, but also so because the game itself is floundering when there’s so many other attractive games out there to play instead. I tried leveling another char to 120 from 110 and stopped at 112 in Tiragarde because it was so mind-numbingly boring. It was fun the first time around, but I’ve got no desire to go through it again. I don’t get the same feeling when I level up alts and go through the Barrens, Thousand Needles, Tanaris etc.
Super Smash Bros Ultimate released a month ago and is still pretty fresh. League of Legends is starting its next ranked season. Steam had its Christmas sale last month and a lot of people likely bought games for cheap that they’re playing right now. Having other things take up my attention leaves me little reason to play WoW until they release another patch.
I play because raiding with my guild friends is fun.
The lore of this game is rather silly, and the only thing sillier is the forum dwellers taking it so very very seriously. All the Team Sylvanus v. Team Saurfang folks remind me of some grown adults I know who take pro wrestling seriously.
I’m sorry, but to me the “lore” in this game is rarely up to par with whatever random piece of junk TV show or movie is playing on my other window.
Blizzard has A+ level talent in the look, feel and sound of a world, and the smoothness of abilities that are used on it, but in my opinion they’ve rarely been better than average at trying to create a believable character or storyline.
A huge chunk of what I’ve seen in game doesn’t make sense to me, isn’t congruent, doesn’t go anywhere, or just doesn’t motivate any passion.
Meanwhile I do like the sense of progression and collection, and playing with a team, and there’s lots of that to do, so I keep playing.
btw, you’re on crack if you think there’s any other game that offers a comparable raid team experience.
What does gameplay have to do with lore?
I agree, I do have terrible taste - but a big part of the appeal in an MMO for me is the setting in which it takes place.
And despite how messy and horrible the WoW lore is, I have a lot of fondness for it. The game seems to be getting worse on a mechanical level however, with all the neutering and removal of abilities - which is what brought this question to mind, really.
I can’t say Wow’s story has made any sense to me, so I just ignore it. Besides, my memory for names sucks, so when characters are mentioned in the text I probably forget them in the next 5 minutes.
Funny about this post is that I have been playing this game for years and never really got involved in the lore. But a few months ago, my son brought me home a WoW book from this book faire at school (no joke!) and I read it. I learned so much about the lore of the game I had no idea about. Since then I have started reading all the books and now I want to go back in time and re-do all the leveling quests, dungeons and raids so I can truly understand what I had already done but now with the knowledge of the lore history behind it. I truly would advise everyone to read the books by Chistie Golden, Richard Knaak and Chris Metzen. You wont regret reading them!
P.S. I’m not getting paid for this advertisement
Honestly in the same way that a lot of people play Oblivion or Skyrim and don’t read the books or know anything but the basics of the story or the world’s history.
I barely read the lore until a couple of years into the game – I just focused on the most important details but I got hooked on the Nobbel vids then listened to a bunch of audiobooks.
Because I can avoid real life responsibilities.
I play games purely for the story. If WoW didn’t have a story to experience and was nothing but pvp, grinding and raiding I wouldn’t even be here.
Lots of people play rpg’s solely for the character progression with gear / skills / stats and seeing your character grow in combat, and couldn’t care less about the story. Growing up on playstation games like Baldurs Gate, Diablo and Champions of Norath, I didnt give a damn about the story. the fun was in the character progression, looting, comba. Not reading some roleplaying text.
When i look back, I don’t think I’ve ever watched a single cutscene in the game, or read a single quest since vanilla. I do like those animated overwatch and WoW shorts on youtube though.
