Why would you play the game if you don't care about the lore?

Simple question. Why play the game if you don’t care about the story?

The entire point of an MMO is the world and the story in it, if you don’t care about that, you’ve just got a meh RPG.

And I know there’s going to be people who say they just ‘play for their friends’. There’s better co-operative RPGs too!

So really, what are you playing for? Not trolling, I’m serious - what do people see in this game if not the world? It’s WORLD of warcraft after all.

It’s something to do.

Same reason some people RP or pvp, it’s alright to enjoy different aspects of the game.

I think you’ve got that a little bit backwards. To me, the entire point of an RPG is the world and story in it. If you don’t care about the roleplay game aspect, you’ve just got a meh MMO.

It’s the same as solitaire was for me great grandparents.

I agree with you. I wouldn’t play this game if I didn’t care about the story.

I know some people that only pet battle and don’t care about leveling, just like some people only want to kill other players.

Mechanics, particularly of the class and/or specialization kind. If I like the “feel” of a class, I’ll likely enjoy one of its specs quite a lot. For example, I love the builder-spender nature of Balance and how its basic builder spells become empowered by their spenders. It’s a fun, little back-and-forth system that I don’t really get sick of.

I agree with you, but I have friends who don’t care one bit about the story. They run up to a quest giver click the button, exit the acceptance screen, run to where the arrow points on the mini map, and move on. I don’t get it, and they’ve stopped playing with me because I take too long.

I try to care about the story… I really do but when they butcher the story so badly and write this horribly it’s hard too. I’m sorry.

I probably could have worded that better - there are a lot of RPGs where the world never comes into play, though. I’m thinking mostly a few JRPGs, where nothing seems to matter aside from getting the crystals or whatever.

Not that all JRPGs are like that, but I’m sure we’ve all played at least one where nothing seemed to matter aside from the collection of stuff.

It kinda broke my heart a little when my best friend, who I’ve been RPing with in this game for over 12 years, started doing that this expansion, because he just didn’t like the storyline. :slightly_frowning_face:

I disagree with this assumption.

I don’t care about it
I skip all cinematics
I don’t read any of the quests

Raiding is really fun, and no other games really feel the same.

Kind of a narrow-minded way to look at any game, OP.

People who RP kind of have to care about the world and the lore within it as a prerequisite though. I speak as someone who casually RPs myself - I’m just wondering why someone would continue to pay $15 a month just for say, raiding or dungeons. It doesn’t seem worth it!

The lore of WoW is part of what has kept people loyal to it. People are very invested in the story. They care.

which begs the question of why really, really, REALLY horrible writing continues to be tolerated.

so tired of the astronomically stupid writing, my God wth is wrong with the writing team for this game.

Is there not even one person in authority at Blizz who can discern good writing from really really really really freakin’ terrible writing and not approve dumb ideas?

I don’t actually think the storyline is all that bad. I really feel like people are overreacting just to overreact.

I 100% do not care about the story at all. I really only play for raiding/mythic + team events.

The story is only a required tasks that I have do to get gear/access to raids. The times I haven’t been able to raid, I have always cancelled my sub.
