I keep saying WoW needs to incorporate a Wildstar-style housing system. It would basically be like printing money and those much coveted online hour metrics would skyrocket.
Housing, if implemented right, would get people out into the world. That would mean the house would offer very little utility. People never left Garrisons because they could do too much in them.
I think wow needs it’s own sandwich shop. My characters have nowhere to go for lunch. Please incorporate this thing that isn’t in the game at all into the game!
If you limit yourself to the World of Warcraft forums than yes I can see how you wouldn’t recognize the overall want for a system like this.
Final Fantasy 14, WoW’s biggest competitor within the MMO scene, has player housing that’s a pretty hot commodity. Even with it’s problems, particularly limited availability, it’s still one of the most popular aspects of that game. I recommend researching it for yourself if you’re interested in learning more about how MMO communities crave a system like this.
Also, this isn’t even really a new idea. Asheron’s Call, an MMO made in 1999, had completely optional player housing and that was also very popular.
FFXIV is terribly boring. This is understandable.
Is it possible that the player base in FF is different than the player base in WoW?
While something in FF might be loved in FF by FF fans, it may not be something that is loved by or wanted by WoW fans.
Oh sure, I never said they were the same. All I’m saying is that player housing as a concept has been popular in many other MMOs and that I believe that it would be the same in WoW. It’s just expression and people love to express themselves in different ways.
Player housing for n WoW…
It is my opinion that this game and the majority of its players would not use or appreciate a feature like player housing. Especially if it can’t be shared / viewed by other players.
SWG and EQ2 had a great player housing construct. Other players could enter and admire the houses built and decorated by their fellow players. SWG even allowed for vendors and crafting stations to be placed in said houses.
WoW is a near-no downtime game and I think the cost and effort needed by the development team is something Blizzard won’t invest in as the player base screams for more content / gear / and other epeen satisfying colored pixels
Yeah it’s more of a story based game initially which requires a lot of reading to enjoy and understand what’s going on in the word around you. I imagine having to read was where you started getting bored?
I would always advocate for player housing/ player cities and such, but WoW just isn’t that kind of MMO. It’s fairly Action RPG anymore. The Garrisons fit that action RPG element where you don’t really interact with the rest of the player base story wise, you’re the singular hero who is just a miracle walking. Your garrison was exactly where everyone else’s was and none of them exist at the same time. Housing would be super cool, but I don’t see it happening.
Why: One more thing players can invest their time/gold into. There’s a high population of collection players that would throw themselves into customizing their homes.
Why not: Probably too much work on the technical side. FF14 only works because they make housing scarce(to the point that you can only feasibly get a plot if you’re in a big guild).
Seeing what FF14 has done with housing and how it ties into crafting, I would very much approve of it being introduced into WoW. Our crafting system is a complete failure and a pathetic joke. It needs something to prop it up.
I would absolutely love this. It should definitely not provide any benefits that force players who aren’t interested to participate, but I think it would be a nice extra to have that could also add items to the Blizzard store.
I agree that it would be cool to have some furniture items that can be crafted by certain professions, in addition it could be fun to have certain raid bosses drop one housing item that thematically matches whatever raid it came from.
As far as location goes, I think the best solution would be to have it be an instanced zone (or maybe a few different ones that are various locations in the game since not everyone likes the same style places) that you can access from Stormwind and Orgrimmar, and then either the house or that neighborhood or whatever it is has a portal back to the major city.
Tl,dr: Shut up and take my money, because I would definitely throw some at this.
Waste of dev time in my opinion.
Look at what happened with garrisons. We were told we’d be able to build it in a zone of our choosing and it would be a meaningful choice and all it ended up being was an instanced capital for everyone, further isolating players from the world and each other.
Even if it’s detached from gameplay (doubtful looking at how they’re doing xpacs), we’d end up with even more bloat like useless toys dropping from rares.
Also, you cannot have player housing without microtransactions… Players who are really into it will be HUGE cashcows and incetivize Blizz spending dev time on a useless system. I disagree even with transmogs being in store…
One thing I forgot to mention for my personal taste would be that the neighborhoods or housing areas are instanced but everyone can go in them and walk through the area. Anyone can enter other players’ houses as well unless the player chooses to lock the house, giving more chances for player interaction in the housing zones as well and seeing what others have done with their place.
Whatever the developers want. It could provide extra rested bonuses, it could give extra quests/drive story, it could drive the economy through crafted items to increase functionality, it could give a convenient hearth in a more remote area, and so on.
It just takes some creativity and development. After all, everything in this game is simply window dressing over various loot systems. It’s the window dressing that makes it fun.
Because bobby needs anotha choppa
I agree, this is a cool idea. Let’s make it happen.
Nah. I started getting bored when I bought nice armor off the AH at level 10, and felt no motivation to gear up.
How many of you have played EQ2? Some of the player housing is nice. However it can be a pain. If you want housing you should check that out first and the guild housing. Some decent vids on youtube.
