Why / Why not: Player Housing

Lol I got a good chuckle out of this. I can relate.

Every mount works pretty much the same, with the some exceptions, so what purpose does it serve to get new ones? Transmutes don’t change how gear works, why bother collecting new appearances? Many glyphs are simply cosmetic and yet people love them. The barbershop was a huge feature people clamored for and all it does is change your appearance.

A large part of this game is centered around the ability to customize things and change appearances. It’s something to do in-between raiding and mythics and so on. It engages players and keeps them connected to the game.

Yea I think it’s just wow not fitting into it.

In new world for example (amazon new mmo, I’m in alpha) it has housing and I actually don’t mind it. It fits with the fast travel and inventory space.

It’s just with wow I can’t see it. I’m sure it could work but probably needs a lot of effort and work.

Knowing Blizzard as it is now they’d probably ruin it anyway in some form or fashion by adding weird systems in place that complicate it to the point that everyone hates it because they have too many cooks in the kitchen.

I’d like the ability to claim/buy land and build a real house in the game world that people can come across.

See I feel after Wrath, like at the very start of Cata would have been the best time for this! Desolace is now green, get your new herb garden while prices are cheap!

One of the benefits in SWToR of the housing is you can buy places on different planets. Oh, I got a mission on Yavin let me port > Exit to world (no need to waste fuel credits or 1-2 extra load screen if theres a dock you have to exit prior to the planet etc)

I would love an Ironforge apartment with a mountaim view overlooking the snow or loch but again, I think the ship has sailed

What more purpose does it need to serve? They just did a massive sweep of character customization as an expansion feature, and transmog has been one of the more dominant features of the game since its inception.

People like personalizing things to their aesthetic appeal. Why not give them more things to personalize?

Not disagreeing, but transmogs and mounts and pets are all things that you carry around with you. I think one of the arguments is that housing would have less appeal because you would have to actively bring someone to it.

Not necessarily. In SWTOR you can open your house so anyone can visit, for example. Just depends upon how they implement it.

I would enjoy it, and do expect to see it eventually. Honestly though, whenever I feel like building my own home, I usually just play second life. I actually have regions of land on open sim that I gave a fantasy theme to, and love it.

I don’t think WoW could ever top that, the closest MMO that I can think of that considered it was EQ Next, unfortunately it never came to fruition.

Nah, it’s lame and pointless.

I guess? Personally all of my customizations are just for me. I couldn’t care less if other people notice, and in fact I rarely notice other people’s transmogs or appearances in game.

Look, if you want to create houses, furnish them and live in the houses, just play The Sims…

Personally I’d love player housing, customizing your own space is fun! But I don’t think it’ll happen.

For it to be successful it can’t feel mandatory like garrisons were. The practical advantages have to be minimal, it’d just be a cosmetic fluffy side feature. Which is not a priority over real end game and future patch things. It’d just take away time they could spend on that.

And Blizz has commented on it before why they don’t do it. Players don’t seem to realize the sheer amount of work that would have to go into it for something that non-central and optional. So it’s unlikely to happen any time soon, if ever at all.

I would go for a SWTOR-style housing setup if we ever had that. The problem, however, is that SWTOR is so seldomly updated nowadays, whereas WoW is a lot more active. SWTOR just had a major story update release on Tuesday - and the last one before that was over a year ago. The last major update patch was back in March - and it added a new stronghold. And people think THIS game has content droughts already.

The look of your gear and mounts are secondary to their function/purpose.

Other than customization, what is the purpose of player housing?

If the only function player housing serves is to look cool, then I don’t see the point. I’m not looking for a place to just hang out in the game.

Player housing would be meaningless to me. So I would want it to be 100% optional meaning players gain 0 game play advantages bonuses from it.

That said I don’t necessarily care if they put it in as long as I can ignore it.

Why not both? The resources spent developing the framework + assets for guild housing would likely be the same for player housing.

See FFXIV, for example. You can either buy a plot of land for yourself or your Free Company (guild). It’s practically the same thing there and it works great for them. (Except the whole limited plots thing but that’s not really related.)

The point is people like having additional avenues of expressing themselves in game which is exactly what player housing accomplishes. You don’t see the appeal and that’s totally fine, but there is definitely a sizeable interest for it even if you can’t understand why.

Judging by this and other threads, I’m not sure what you mean by “sizeable”.
