Why were class trainers removed?

As I am leveling new characters I see all these class trainers that literally do nothing. I don’t understand why? Blizzard now has a system that automatically adds your new abilities to your spell book when you level up, but that not only less rewarding feeling than going to the class trainer to learn the ability, but also sometimes confusing when you don’t notice that you get an ability.

It’s more convenient and streamlined to get your abilities automatically instead of having to go to a trainer and learn your abilities.

I’m pretty sure they’re there to enter the proving grounds, but idk if that’s still a thing. Other than that, they’re probably just there still because it’s less effort to not remove them.

Was it really rewarding to run back to town to have two spells do 15 more damage? Or did it just feel tedious to get the reward for leveling up?

Back then, gold actually mattered so yes - you had to buy your training for abilities which then felt like an upgrade you earned.

We don’t need trainers, we are champions/hero’s now

“I just leveled up, time to see if I have enough gold to train skills.”

Played through classic to relieve, and no. If you were not wasting gold on things like rez rank 2 or shopping on the AH gold isn’t an issue, coming from a healer who spent mad gold on mana drinks.

Yes it was.

Having to go back to a capital city and spend gold to learn new spells is one of the many things eliminated from WoW in the name of convenience. Along with stuff like changing specializations.

Another immersive aspect removed in the name of convenience and replaced with a system that has zero basis in-game.

I don’t get the idea the folks running WoW understand or even care about the genre.

I honestly think this is one of their greatest errors. I for one believes that you should have to train your class. How else can you learn? This is an actual opportunity missed by the game that should not be overlooked. You should have to train as to how good you are. I have no doubt others will argue that if you can shoot a bow in classic, you cannot forget how to shoot one in TBC. So a different circle shall be drawn.

The wow community sure like to conflate rewarding with hassle.

Actually, this isn’t a bad point.

Back in the day, when we were just pretty much faceless irregulars and mercenaries, having trainers made some amount of sense.

Now that we’ve fought literal Titans, the idea that you could swing by Bob’s Action Karate, or Emily’s Magical Learning Annex and Cafe and be taught something is kinda… hard to swallow.

Granted, it would just be one more thing on that pile, given how we’re supposed to be effectively ultra chosen demigods and yet raids and instances and group quests are still things, but… just because your neighbor’s house is on fire doesn’t mean you should go Claude Frolo on the whole city.

“Immersive”

Cool, I gotta walk all the way back to Stormwind to learn new abilities and run out of gold for that mount I can’t get for another 10 levels.

Yes, immersive. Sorry that actually interacting with the gameworld is an issue for you.

They should add them back so you can do a short scenario like the class trials by taking to them.

And also more class quest please

I actually like having to train new things. Old Republic left trainers in. It costs nothing and they have a toy for a holo trainer, making it convenient.

Because back when class trainers had abilities, people never wanted to go back to town to train, and routinely didn’t upgrade more than once every 20 levels when they remembered ‘oh right, I probably have a new rank of smite to level. No wonder I suck so bad at killing mobs now’

I recall numerous discussions in classic by players discussing which skills they hadn’t purchased because they were saving up for their mount. I know when I left after leveling up one of my issues was how slow progress toward buying my epic mount was, and how I wouldn’t be able to do PvP without it.

When you get a new ability, the message should suggest you visit the class trainer for more information. If a player did, they would be offered one or more quests to help them understand when and why they would use that spell, and perhaps even a little scenario at times. Totally optional.

I still haven’t come around to auto-learned abilities.

I routinely miss them because half the time I ding I’m in the middle of fighting, and even if I notice that I got something new I often forget to add them to my actionbars after getting back to a hub. Several times I’ve gone upwards of 5 levels not knowing I got anything new.

Even if autolearn is more streamlined, needing to go to the trainer made for a smoother experience since it followed the ebb and flow of leveling… training naturally fit into the periodic city trips you’d be making anyway, and because it was a task in itself you were always situated to pay attention to the new abilities you were getting and properly integrate them into your setup.
