Why was re forging removed?

reforging was awesome when you wanted less of a awful stat for your spec. these days your forced to hunt down the right piece and just have all of the stat you dont want.

Reforging was mainly introduced to help players reach their hit and / or expertise hard / soft caps.

When those were removed in WoD, Reforging lost its purpose so Blizzard removed it.

removing those doesnt make the reforger invalid it makes a unusable piece usable

Basically ION thought that every time someone won a piece of gear they vanished for an hr to reforge it. Shortly this was followed up by his famous. “I want you to equip gear and forget about it, no running to add ons or 3rd party sites”

An we all seen how well that’s worked out.

Soooo we go to go farm the 5 man we need for the piece of loot that the 3rd party website says is bis. I’ve looted stuff that was just useless secondary stat wise for my spec and go “this piece is a complete downgrade to what I’m wearing even though it’s a higher item level”

yeah it’s basically because ion is extraordinarily disconnected from the playerbase.

Reforging was removed because the reason it was put into the game was no longer relevant.

It was not to get rid of “a awful stat”, it was to get rid of a DEAD stat: excess hit and expertise.

When hit rating and expertise rating were removed from the game, there was no longer the possibility of having a dead stat, so reforging was likewise removed.

Things have gotten so complicated that there isn’t really BiS anymore, people just tell you to go sim it.

Reforging existed because things like hit rating and expertise existed. You need to have those maxed out to be effective but any points above the max were wasted. Reforging was a band-aid fix to that issue which was made obsolete when the devs realized they could just get rid of those mechanics altogether.

Maybe that was the design, but it served more than that.

And it could still be one today.

Because we no longer need to reach hit caps.

Like usual, Ion exemplifies he doesn’t understand the game he supposedly head dev of.

He was an absolutely amazing encounter dev. But as head Dev, he’s overseen every major drop in player numbers due to really poor gameplay decisions.

I Truly had hoped Microsoft would clean house.

This has been typical forever, gems, enchants, transmog, or when reforging was a thing. It’s not something they can really control unless they get rid of all that stuff.

I would love to see reforging come back.

Three reasons:

  • Removal of hit and expertise. Reforging was primarily to allow us to reach the hit cap and such, and the removal of that stat removed some of the need for reforging.

  • Blizz didn’t like that when a piece of gear dropped you often wouldn’t put it on. You’d need to reforge and enchant it first.

  • Most players simply put their gear into Mr Robot and it would just tell them what to reforge. Blizz didn’t like that it was basically a mandatory step to loot that didn’t require any thought. I disagree, but that’s how they saw it.

Personally, I liked reforging and think they should bring it back.

Idk if it’s a stated reason or not, but at the time secondary stats effected different specs disproportionately.

I remember in cata, mastery was basically a primary stat for frost mages. By late xpac when hit cap was easy to come by, I just reforged everything into mastery and it was extremely OP. Not every class benefited from secondaries like this, and the ones that did had their power level creep up with reforging.

It wouldn’t make unusable pieces usable tho unless you think a small amount of a good stat makes up for 2 bad stats on a piece. You would still want to get a better piece

Call it what you want, but it look’s like another way to try and squeeze out more sub time from player’s by making them have to chase down that one “bis” instead of having multiple viable options to choose from and simply reforge.

There are almost no useless pieces of gear that arent trinkets and jewelry. Every single slot can be catalyzed for usually different stats.

This has to do with dumb BIS lists and stat weights that are being treated like a hard rule. Some pieces are small upgrades than others, some pieces may not be. That is ok and better than having to go to a vendor every single time I get a piece of loot.

Stats don’t even matter anymore outside of haste for healers to not feel completely awful.

The healer thing and having to cast is still a relic of the old game. I think casting will be phased out eventually with the way these encounters are going, you barely can cast as it is.

I definitely agree reforging should return. Even if it’s original intended purpose doesn’t exist, it would still allow an extra degree of customization and tuning to your character, transferring some less optimal stats to more optimal ones. It’s not like it was hard. Also serves as another gold sink.
