Why was layering turned off again?

Blizzard, please re-enable layers. You clearly enabled it a month ago, for a good reason. Those reasons still exist now. We now have 4+ hour queues just to play the game after coming back from work

Do we know this for sure? I could envision a scenario where there are essentially two parallel AQ events going on, one on each layer. That would match how other things like world buffs and world bosses work on layered servers.

Would this be weird? Sure, but I don’t think it would be game breaking. Servers like Whitemane are so massive that they could easily support two separate gate openings with their active populations. Hell, that might make the scarab lord race less toxic, and is probably required for Silithus to be remotely playable at the start of P5.

I don’t even see why it matters if there are multiple layers for the AQ event, oh no there might be an extra scrab mount on the server.

interesting haw they have a lot of you begging for layering now

There will be several regardless on any competitive server. It would be more like two separate 10 hour windows in which to ring the gong, which is basically how world boss windows work on Whitemane when layers are active.

I suppose layering was turned off in an attempt to remind people that it was only a temporary solution to a problem.

What was the problem? Some people prefer not to have queues. Among those people, some seem to prefer those queues to the solutions available that include playing on other servers or logging in at different times.

Layering isn’t (apparently) a long-term solution to the problems these players have.

Yeah. That seems like a reasonably acceptable trade-off to me, but there may be some other issues with layering that aren’t particularly common knowledge.

The only time I EVER saw queues at 5 digits on Whitemane was in the days following WoW Classic’s original release. Those queues were of the “get home at 430pm, sit in a 12k queue, sleep, wake up, finally get past the queue boss at 2am” variety.

The ones today, and the ones that originally re-enabled layers a month ago or whatever, are of the couple thousand person variety that take 4-5 hours to sit through.

Yes, and player behavior is quite different now compared to at launch, such that a queue of a few thousand now is just as bad as 5 figures during launch month. The majority of the playerbase now raids actively and logs on hours in advance of a scheduled raid night without ever logging off, compared to a much more consistent rate of leveling players logging off after a play session during launch. The projected queue time has doubled over a span of just 10 minutes both yesterday and today since nobody is logging off.

if they wanted this to happen, they would be offering free transfers.

AQ will bring whitemane as a server to its knees anyways sans layering as 10k+ players attempt to wedge themselves into a single zone, so this baseless speculation on your part is really a moot point.

Why can’t they poll individual servers if they want layering instead of all the servers to see if they want layering. I mean when AQ comes out everyone with a server pop of over an active 4000 players will be begging for layers. They will need them.

All you have to do is have the rep and ring the gong within the first 10 hours of the gate opening. It is not a question of quest rewards or titles.

Do you all not get that the only reason why q’s exist on any server right now is because of the thousands of bots??? When layering was removed there was no Q, now every server is swarmed with bots and they are inflating the pool. Layering is a temp fix until Blizzard can figure out a process to permaban bot accounts and flag them faster. It is literally the ONLY reason why we are having an issue on these servers. When you have thousands of fresh accounts that never logoff and are botting quest zones. Transfers are not an option for people who dont want to move, now that queues exist they will only get worse as players now have to use Teamviewer to stay logged in 24/7 so they can raid. They need people actually ACTIONING THE BOTS.

All of which have equal or higher to the populations of full vanilla realms

But, in classic these are “dead” servers.

So instead we campaign for sharded mega servers because nothing screams vanilla like someone just disappearing to another shard.

Maybe there isn’t any “something else” that “fixes the issue”. Maybe we keep demanding something impossible, when players say “Just fix it!”

But if your suggestion is “use layering for now”, that’s reasonable. That’s clearly a trade-off, on a realm-by-realm basis. It’s something Blizzard can do.

JUST BRING THE LAYERS BACK THIS IS DUMB WHY DO I PAY $ TO PLAY A 15y/o game THAT HAS 2.5hr QUEUE TIME?

Herod is the same way. Bring back layering the problem wasn’t fixed and disabling Layering was a terrible idea. When will Blizzard learn from their mistakes? Sure the world buffs were harder to get but at least you could get online!?!

EZ
to sell more xfers. only the weak minded will fall for that ole trick though

It really is this simple. If the vast majority of players on the largest servers want layering back even given the consequences on future gameplay like the AQ event, then let them have it! Transfers have been and will continue to be available for the minority which refuses to play on a layered server.
