It’s a reference to one of their “teachers,” Locus-Walker, who is an ethereal.
As far as I know, “Ethereals” are not a state of being. They aren’t like demons in the sense that any race can just become an ethereal.

I thought they were trying to turn them into Ethereals, Void Ethereals like the Prince.
Ethereal’s lost their home world and bodies to Dimensius the All Devouring.
Ethereals are not ethereals by choice.

I watched a video of the Void Elves recruitment scenario and the Nether Prince comfirms it.
He says “My people were reshaped by the Void. Stripped from the limitations of flesh. We offer you the same gift.”
This means he tried to turn them into beings similar to the Nether Prince. You can see it here:
