Why the Maw is a Failure as a Zone

I like it so far.
Once geared, normal zones, except for the odd rare eilte or world bosses, are not a threat. They become boring.

The Maw will be a danger (from MY point of view) for a while, even if well geared. Jailer’s Eye is a nice feature that makes it different from all other zones.

You forgot to mention that because if the eye of the jailer it actively discourages and punishes you if you help other players who might be in trouble.

You forgot ‘and go to bed and cry’ at the end. Yeah I lost 2700 stygia there on my main with one death I couldn’t return to. Not as bad as the guy who went afk thinking he was in vernari’s refuge but was just out of it and died over and over and came back to find he lost 10k stygia.

Remove the socket rewards, and you would have precisely zero coherent people doing the Maw. It’s obviously no secret that’s what it was designed for. The developers know it sucks the biggest donkidik imaginable, but they know people will run it because of completionism. The place literally exists to get try-hards their sockets.

It also quite succinctly explains why they lowered the drop rate on loot as well. Increased loot drops means better chance at getting loot with sockets without having to grind for them…can’t have that now can we?

I hate the maw. I hope that who ever had the idea to disable mounts but still let worgens, druids, shamans, etc still have full mobility, plus all the people that put their stamp of approval on that garbo idea, get hit by actibliz’s the next massive layoff.

Not in the way we want, but it certainly feels like hell down there.

While I have to applaud the developers for being willing to try new things, some things neither need to be tried nor merit experimentation. The Maw is one such example.

In the best games, story and gameplay need to intermingle harmoniously, and while the Maw fits the narrative bill for “WoW hell” very nicely, the gameplay side of life is basically Annoying Orange expressed as RPG content. While the aesthetic of the Maw is great and effective, that’s all it has going for it. The function and execution of the Maw makes me actively not want to play there, and content people actively avoid is content that should never have had resources allotted to it.

It’s also annoying that the Jailer’s Eye can lock you out of unrelated quests. Covenant campaign sends you there right after you just collected souls and did some weeklies and stuff? Ha ha! Sucks to be you! Come back and finish your story quests tomorrow.

It’s one of those ideas that didn’t survive the “sounds good on paper, let’s see how it works in the game!” test.

This is a common occurance, but the problem is that Blizzard didn’t back off when they should have.

I had that happen this week and it was frustrating, to say the least. I’d already hit Tier 5 Eye by the time I was sent back into the Maw on behalf of my covenant.

The maw to me from a visual standpoint is one of the best looking zones in game, but, I gotta agree, the maw has no sense of direction. I can solo layer 8 in torghast and not once did I use an upgrade from the maw.

I like the maw. Don’t @ me.

I hate when people say stuff like this. Stop wishing people lose their jobs, that’s messed up.

You forgot "everything takes extra amounts of time if you’re not Worgen or a Druid, who can “mount up” while others can’t.

I’ve seen games that have showed us HELL, made it dangerous, but also encouraged us to take the risks and stick around.

The MAW failed in the desire to stick around while knowing the risks.

how is hell suppose to feel like to us? heaven?

Hey, who’s to say you can’t have fun in hell?

Lake of hellfire? Time to swim. Sulfur and brimstone? Breathe it in.

Fare point
Tho i ain’t smellin sulfur and brimstone… got enough of that smell from deathwings bad breath.

Mount yes, but the quests and dailies we had to do there were garbage just like the Maw’s ones are.

Still my favorite area in all of Wow.
