Sometimes I wonder if people think that private servers were created in a weekend or something.
EXACTLY. This guy gets it. All they need to do is call the RunWorldofWarcraft() function with “1.12” version parameter. Why the delay Blizz?
Gives us it now! They steals it from us, tricksy devses! My precious!
It works on Private Serverz!
Clearly they are never going to release it and hoping we’ll just forget about it.
We’ve been had!
You do know that blizz literally didn’t have the code for vanilla. They had to take it from other sources and are rebuilding the entire game. That takes time.
This is also nonsense.
They had a backup of 1.12. The time is adapting 1.12 to the modern server infrastructure and game client.
Err… not to burst your bubble, but they did. All code going back to 1997 they still have.
What they didn’t have was the databases.
What they couldn’t do however, was release the original server code riddled with known bugs and exploits, because their modern infrastructure and Battle Net protection couldn’t be incorporated in it, and they didn’t want to maintain two infrastructure code bases.
- Find 15 year old game on floor of closet.
- “ZOMG so rad! I’m gonna play this rite nowwwww!”
- Try to install on current PC.
- Hella problems.
- Google hacks, patches, and outdated “updates” for next several days.
- Curse. Repeat.
- Finally get game to start.
- Praise Zuul!
- Bugs.
- Crashes.
- Curse. Repeat.
- Give up, smoke and watch cartoons.
I have done several versions of this with old games I really loved. I would rather not replicate that experience with Classic. Give them time to do it right.
sorry for asking… seems to have upset some people.
blizz literally said that they do not keep backups. of anything. the 1.12 they are using is off of private server data that they bought.
Can you request to sticky individual posts, if so, I recommend this one.
they literally said they had no code from the original game. they overwrite all code while making a new expansion and updates. the code they are using is off of ones they had bought from private servers.
They literally did not. They literally said they had code going back to 1997.

No, they used a source code repository, just like every company since CVS was released. They overwrote the DATABASE with every update and didn’t have any backups prior to 1.12.
… wut? This is so absurd I can’t even.
Actually the 1.12 client fixed a lot of the bugs. So they are redeveloping 1.12 to now include the bugs and crashes at the start so its an authentic experience =)
Maybe because you haven’t been reading/watching anything about the project. They’re not just opening an emulated 1.12 server, they’re porting the old database, spell batching system, bugs, the whole shebang really to a 7.3 source code that can work with their modern servers. That by itself takes a ton of work (as shown at Blizzcon).
my bad. the problem is that I have a life. I don’t sit on the internet all day. thus, I stopped in to ask the question
DING DING DING DING
Roll credits.
Yeah you guys, Brassmonkey has too many coats of wax to put on his McLaren and too many BBQs to plan to waste his time with a search or 2 minute read or 5 minute video.
The only thing his busy schedule has time for is to whine on the forums about getting a release date for a video game.
This man lives in the fast lane, so speed up or get out of his way.
Key word here:
Delay
Its may 2nd, summer starts in a little over a month, we dont have any information. Its most likely going to be pushed back. Get over it.
