Personal loot: Down boss, didn’t get item, get a bit annoyed at the game for it not dropping yet again this week, it’s your lowest ilvl piece of gear. You have hope maybe it will be in the weekly vault on Tuesday. Oh Johnny got it to drop, but it’s +5 ilvl better then his so he can’t trade it, so Johnny keeps it and the raid goes on. No drama.
Group loot: Down boss, item drops, finally. You been waiting for this to drop for weeks but you haven’t seen it. You roll need, it’s a big +20 ilvl upgrade, Johnny also rolls need, it’s a +5 ilvl upgrade. Johnny wins roll. Now you’re annoyed at Johnny for rolling against you, because it’s clearly a much bigger upgrade for you then it is Johnny.
Difference? Personal loot you only really can be mad at the game when you miss out on getting an item. Group loot, you have to roll twice - first against the game HOPING it actually drops, then against any other players who ALSO want the drop
Personal loot = the better, less drama gearing system
Group loot = guild/pug drama
I’ve been in guilds with lots of different loot systems, there’s ALWAYS been drama against players, which I only seen go away for the most part when personal loot got added
Imagine being in a guild that did DKP with personal loot.
Yeah I’ve been in those in retail. You talk about drama when someone puts the piece on and bails due to personal loot then just simply transfers servers.
Or if someone can’t trade the piece and then it’s a massive upgrade for one of your other raiders but it just gets chucked in the DE pile cause it’s untradeable.
Why would anyone be in that guild? Yeah it felt bad if you can’t trade something you knew you wouldn’t use because it was +5ilvl or so higher but with worst stats, but in my time playing with personal loot a lot of people are willing to share items they can share, and I haven’t seen a whole lot of pressure to try and FORCE people to hand something over. If it was an upgrade for me, I would 100% equip it and leave, personal loot = mine to decide what to do with. Now we had little rules like to whisper the raid leader a piece you want to trade, and they roll it MS > OS with a sort of loot council of guildies > pugs, but in general any personal loot you got was yours to keep unless you WANTED to trade it/offer it up
Lot of guilds on the realm I was on did that for mythic.
Been in pugs where someone asked for an item and the other person disenchanted out of spite or straight up vendored it. LFR has folks with an addon that auto whispers folks if they have an item that can be traded.
And that’s the issue with personal loot. Just because you could use an item doesn’t mean it’s the best for you to use because of ilevel. What about stats / does it give you your 4 piece 2 piece?
Ya pugs are diff and in that regard when I do pugs in classic it’s generally just left on open roll and we are honest with each other. Retail they put restrictions in when there was a roll system to keep hunters from needing everything.
Now master loot isn’t a perfect system and can 100% be abused or the need before greed can be 100% abused as well, but it goes into the honesty of the players in your group.
Retail though you can cross server group and I have a feeling if someone is constantly needing on stuff they don’t need (like a clothie needing on plate) they will get kicked out and possibly reported.
Yes you can report people for that from my understanding. You ask loot rules before the run starts and if it goes away from that, it can be reported.
Current system the whole rolling aspect is just hidden from view.
Think about it. There’s items that are need rolled on from specific classes that can use it but you don’t actually click the button or anything. The system automatically does it.
