Why not last names?

Just download “MyRoleplay” and you can have everything :innocent:
To be honest I spend hours to find out name for my characters … for this one Ifc not … but if I need to search a last name too … well

At most i have done a super ruff bracket style story for my main character and thought in my head how to get my other toons involved in the story. Well still keeping to the games actual story.

It was ruff but folks i have shown the ruff idea liked it lol.

Characters in Warcraft don’t have last names, silly! Just imagine how silly some of the already fairly outrageous characters would sound with equally outrageous last names. Like Arthas. He would probably be something like Arthas Menethil (named after Menethil harbor of course). Silly! Jaina would be Jaina Proudmoore, after Proudmoore Keep, in Boralus. They’d even give characters like Magni super obvious names like Magni Bronzebeard, because he’s a Bronzebeard type of Dwarf.

It would just evolve into chaos, you know!

My guess is the database and the code involving it are the biggest hurdles. Our names are unique so the game knows where to send items, who to attach achievements to, ect.

Because we don’t need a hundred people with the same first name running around. That would get confusing.

I honestly believe it would cause a lot of game breaking stuff. Also they’d have to do a lot of work on the name filter system itself since it’s set to tell you “name already taken”.

To us we may think of it as a simple switch to pull, but I’ve ventured into the basic realm of programming/coding, and even by my own accord it’s not always as simple as we may think :eyes:.

issue found among RP name types, at least with elves, is we have the same common references. Among them would be Tolkien Sindarin (and the decent selection of name generator sites for it).

A good “proper” elf name means something. It just so happens its real easy for many people to want the same theme to a name. You’d be surprised at how many know of Sindarin. I have made elves who it took 20 name tries.

I am not the only Duvainil. I claim this on 2 servers. A 3rd server…its not me. Guess we both wanted to be “beautiful darkness”. what this can translate too.

TRP helps with this in the game. But as we have seen there are those zealots who live to report non RP names on rp servers. these boards get a fun poster from time to time. Many of us think they aren’t even trolling. this poster we think does log in for hours to report away…

You could have the TRP profile to make even die hard RP’ers go damn…I am impressed.

Its these zealots who report merely off seeing your name in chat/walking around that would not even check the trp.

Why is your elf named jakethedog? report.

maybe the player said screw this after 30 tries at legit rp names, made a name, it worked, and made the TRP profile in game. I’d not blame them for this really.

Are you talking about a certain panda? She is my comic relief, and I enjoy watching her suffer for being an ERP police.

They previously had a bad experience with splitting names. Starcraft II closed beta used to have a system of naming by letting players have two names separated by a period. This led to some really awful names like someone had the name “childmo.Lester” on the top of the ladder. They scrapped that naming system soon after.

I don’t think toons need last names. And I hope blizz will always agree.

Because of threads like these, I’m going to name my next toon Wojohowicz.

TRP/MRP are fine for adding last names, but WoW should really have opened up the option to have them on its own. Saying they were looking into it back in TBC is not really helpful.

And I wasn’t the one asking for it I merely did some legwork and posted what I found.

Yep. The one thing that takes me the longest is trying to figure out a unique name that fits the character, and how I feel about it.

I’ve never put thought into a last name…god if I did it’d take even longer to create a character for me, and that’s honestly not a hassle I wanna partake in. lol

I support the idea of last names. It would also pave the way for things like server merges, that are necessary in some situations as it would create a more detailed unique identifier and there could be more than one John on a server if there were John Smiths and John Jones. All you’d have to do is make it so their name functions like the -servername does now for tells or remove the space between the first and last name so that the last name acts as an extension. So you’d message Johnsmith but the display over their head would be John Smith.

It would be rad. As for why they haven’t done it… Dunno. Maybe it’d be hard to implement for already existing characters without messing something up? Lord knows every time they alter the stuff that’s hard-coded into the game the entire thing goes up in flames.

Certain races would logically miss out, but that only really matters if you RP. Trolls and Draenei off the top of my head generally don’t have surnames, with some rare exceptions.

It would also help with getting names that are “taken” with the excuse that you have a different surname. So many “normal” human names would suddenly be fair game. It would be great.

I’m guessing it’s a database limitation somehow. It may be possible but probably more work than they want to do.

It’s likely each character exists on the server’s database with their name as the unique key. That unique key ties into lots of things in various tables of the database. Trying to add another field to that unique key may break things across too many tables for them to consider it being worth it.

Look at how long it took Sony to fix the PSN ID change issue.

The only thing I want really is spaces and longer names. I guess u could do last names with spaces so that solves 2 issues at once

You asked a question and I answered it. No need to get defensive over nothing.

there’s gonna be a million ____ Strifes and whatever Sephiroths last name is if that feature was added.

I mean I’m not complaining but just a heads up
