really, like i said a simple “hi” or “thanks for the run” and people never reply, whats the point of playing an MMO if you dont blend in with the community? people just act like the rest of the party are bots. if you dont wanna communicate (unless its for bashing someone, thats how most people use it anyway) why not playing a singleplayer game?
I’ve played a lot of different servers and noticed some are more friendly than others. I also think the lack of socialization in the game might be a reflection of the current human culture. I find people in real life are not as friendly, helpful, and social as when I was younger. When I do a pick- up dungeon in wow I still say hello to the group, and say thanks and wish them well at the end. About 99% of the time nobody responds but I like to think I might have brightened someone’s day - at least I hope I did.
This has been the case since the dungeon finder was first introduced way back in the day. It isn’t recent sadly.
Explains what is coming next week.
there really is a big incentive to not speak within the game… so many players just report others for nothing, then they get their accounts silenced even when they did nothing wrong.
Generally, people greet each other.
Especially within the Mythic Plus community. Generally, there’s at least a simple greeting and at the end a simple thanks.
And when there’s not? Who cares?
Did the content get completed and get completed efficiently or could there be improvements ? That’s typically the only thing that matters at the end.
I don’t need to know your life, your problems, or any random piece of information in a pug. Do the content. Let’s get in, let’s get out.
Typically, people have their friends for that type of conversation. And if you continuously run with the same pigs that later become friends? Great.
Otherwise, there’s no real need to sit and have a conversation and waste time. People don’t want to waste time. But waste is relative. It’s not the same for all players.
If I’m pugging something, especially low level content, I want to get in and get out.
Because there’s no WeakAura for managing social interaction.
Yet.
Speaking in online games with an auto punish system based on reports executable with just a right click always bears some risk.
It’s really sad, I remember when the dungeon group would talk so much that we’d be distracted and die to something silly, people would laugh make jokes, also people would just chat about what they were looking forward to, like gear, mounts, the game story whatever. Yea I miss that.
Sometimes people will chat a little in Mythics, though most times its silence.
This made me picture a big raid warning “Say hello back!”
At most I may see a “GG” or two at the end of a dungeon, and LFR is always vocal (for better or worse), but players definitely don’t socialize like they used to. There’s also no need, which is probably the heart of the problem. For me, this is fine. I don’t socialize much. I do understand the frustration, however, of those who would prefer a more social experience.
Standing around in town I get players to talk to me.
When I’m out in the world doing stuff, I talk in /1 and others chat with me sometimes.
In dungeons and LFR by the time I type “Hi” in the chat the tank is already half way to the first boss.
Open world is more friendly and chaty than instances.
I like Open world more because of the social aspects.
Wrong!
It has gotten so bad since M+ was introduced its crazy!
If they are nice, I will talk.
I admit I don’t do mythic+ so I wouldn’t know. But I do enough random heroics in both WotLK and retail (and have since WotLK was retail) to know that silence has been a thing ever since “quick match” (dungeon finder) was introduced. But it does vary from group to group.
hi
nice to meet you
Obviously some things like game features such and LFR and Dungeon finder play a role, however, IMO the biggest reason is just the growth of the internet and the people on it.
Back in the early days of wow (and the MMOs that preceded it) social media wasn’t really a thing. The internet as a social platform was an new and novel concept. People used to talk more in game cause that was a unique feature of MMOs. You didn’t have many options for live chatting with random people with shared interests compared to today.
However, as social media platforms began to grow and the way the internet was used shifted, the novelty of a game that also served as an instant messenger was no longer there. People had better options tailored for socializing on the internet.
People still do socialize but the platform has shifted. Discord being the big on currently. It’s far easier to chat while playing by having discord or some other social media up than to be confined to the wow text box.
Game features definitely play a role as well, but even if we only had the in game features of vanilla wow, I still think in-game socializing would’ve fallen overtime in favor of platforms made specifically for socializing online.

Hi
“I’m just here for the vault. If anything drops for me that you can use let me know and I’ll let you have it free.”
