This isn’t a rant I’m just genuinely curious what people think the reason is. No good ideas? Too hard to balance more classes? Not enough development time/resources?
All of the above.
This.
Tough to balance the current ones and any new ones would take too much from the existing ones.
If anything, tinker or bard seem to be the most original for possibly the expansion after SL. Necromancer is too much like DK/warlock.
BFA like WoD, cut short. We were supposed to have another year of content including 2 more Warfronts. Shadowlands probably would have been a late 2021 expansion.
BfA lasted 2y, just like all other expansions. It came out August 2018.

You wanted it to last 3y? That’d be far too long!
Is that going to make you suffer? then yes, YES I DO!
Resources.
That and it would require more meddling in the lore which is already engulfed in a quagmire of sewerage.
According to Blizzard they have multiple ideas for future classes, but apparently none of them fit story wise to introduce during Shadowlands.
Which is unfortunate because I feel Necromancer would’ve been perfect considering we are going to the land of the dead.
Not to mention all the (long overdue) unpruning they’re doing - classes will have expanded toolsets on top of things as well.
Tinkerer has some WarCraft credit, but there’s basically nothing to suggest the existence of a “Bard” class. Necromancer has more basis, but would be wholly redundant, not to mention extremely generic.
If they were going to do another class, my vote would have been for the Dark Ranger - we’ve only one class fulfilling the “Archer” archetype, while we’ve myriad casters and melee. It’s also a WarCraft staple, and would have been relevant for the Shadowlands.
That said, we already have an edgy Elves-only class…
They already have Hunters and they can’t do any better IMO. I love this class so much!
A new class would require real effort.
Blizz doesn’t do that anymore.
they havent even fixed the ones we currently have. spriest would like a word.
Blizzard couldn’t think of a new melee class to add and we know they won’t ever add a new ranged one.
What lore meddling do you need for tinkerer? Using crazy gadgets to fight would require a complete rewrite of gnomes and goblins? I think not. Or what about battle suits? Have gnomes never been shown in battle mechs before? I vaguely remember their grand leader using one to kick off Legion. It’s more of lore issue that tinkerers aren’t in the game yet.
Eh, give us Dragonsworn with one of the specs focused on the bow. Dark Ranger is too narrow a concept. Dragonsworn could be open to all classes, and mechanically whatever Blizzard feels appropriate.
I think a blank slate is what they need. A class for what the game has become, rather than something being dragged kicking and screaming into modernity.
I would guess balance like others have said but they have kept a trend every other expansion came with a new class so to find out this time there wont be one is kinda odd.
- Vanilla - The 9 base classes
- The Burning Crusade - Nothing
- Wrath of the Lich King - Death Knight
- Cataclysm - Nothing
- Mist of Pandaria - Monk
- Warlords of Draenor - Nothing
- Legion - Demon Hunter
- Battle for Azeroth - Nothing
- Shadowlands - Nothing?
Maybe the whole covenant thing is suppose to make for it since in the post they did a part of it is titled “covenant class and signature abilities”.
They haven’t even finished off the last class they added and when they added that they ended up just loading them with over bloated abilities
I’m just going to assume they couldn’t work out how to make another melee class that wasn’t just a copy and paste of another melee class with different colours for spells.
A range dps class is out of the question, stop being crazy and thinking its an option
You’re not supposed to make alts in this game.
I don’t see balance as an issue for them. If they are truly worried about balance corruption never would’ve been introduced into this game, as well as essences.
I think it just came down to them having an idea then scraping it and not having a fall back. Though I think since we aren’t getting a new class we should be getting new race class combinations furthering the “customization” expansion and one of the main bullet points of their Shadowlands pitch.
