I get what you’re saying, and it sounds reasonable on the surface. Because, yeah, no one wants a bad story, and of course everyone wants good characters that are not negative sterotypes.
However, there is a dangerous side to that - And one that we see all too often.
For ~Certain people~ there will never be a “Well written” enough LGBT+ character for them. They always claim to care about the story, but in reality that’s just a guise to cover up their true feelings (They don’t want gay people in the game)
Wanting well written characters is good. I’d love nothing more than if all the characters were awesome, and relatable, and so on, but you can’t use “Well they must be flawlessly written!” as a purity test before a character can be LGBT+. That same standard is never applied to Straight/Cisgender characters.
I use him as an example a lot, because it’s honestly prime. Flynn? Flynn Fairwind? You might know him. Epic pirate, friend of Taelia, all around cool guy and know all over the sea as not someone to be messed with, mate! (That’s my Flynn RP. How was it?) People loved him. He’s a fun, funny, and all around good character. But concerns of how he is written only ever come up when you mention him and Shaw being together.
When their relationship was confirmed, the LGBT+ circles I am in were BLOWN. AWAY. Because we loved it! It was being done so well. But again…for some people…It wasn’t good enough. Weird, right?
I’ve explained this kind of thing in threads before, and it never seems to get across. That’s why I take to trolling a bit, it’s more fun than just repeating myself :3
I believe your intentions are good, because yes everyone does want well written characters, but I do hope you understand that putting unnecessary barriers to entry for LGBT+ characters just isn’t needed for them to exist. If it’s bad, we’ll call it bad - But the only way we get to that point is if they are allowed to happen in the first place.
Wow this was longer than I meant it to be lol
