Why Isn't WoW A Video Game Until Max Level?

I haven’t leveled a new character in a while, and I was bored, so I thought why not, and my god, a cure to boredom this is not…

Every single dungeon run is a tank sprinting at mach 10 killing every creature in existence in milliseconds. Normal mob, elite, boss, doesn’t matter. I feel awful for new players if this is their first experience in the game.

The low level dungeon scaling needs a good hard look, because this sucks.

WoW, in Vanilla, was about the leveling experience. Leveling took far longer, money was scarce, had to run everywhere on foot before 40, no instant dungeon teleportations, etc.

At max level the game slowed down. It transitioned from people experiencing the world to wanting to get to max level to do the dungeons and rep grinds and attunements for raids. If you didn’t get the rep early enough you got left behind in your guild.

vanilla/classic leveling experience is far preferred.

no idea why they tried to move away from one of their main sellingpoints.

that wheel wasn’t squeaking. why grease?

Old game. The Vanilla formula is stellar in the beginning but after say 2-3 expansions it becomes deeply problematic.

It’s partially why Vanilla but particularly HC is so popular atm. The leveling experience is almost the end game with the spicy thrill of HC(albeit DCing counting is hot garbage).

The wheel especially changed after Cataclysm when getting alts was super cool due to revamp zones and leveling not being extremely painful anymore.

Yet, while it made reaching the end game easier and faster it also killed some of the power of leveling.

I wouldn’t bother thinking it’s going to get changed anytime soon, the game has too many expansions and with Chromie time it’s even worse.

Probably WOW 2 is where they can make it matter again.

I don’t really care if leveling is fast or slow. You could gain ten levels in one dungeon for all I care. I just want that one dungeon to be fun.

I want to actually play the game while I’m playing the game, you know?

Imagine trying to get into wow and the first thing you see is a bunch of people sprinting to the end cuz they’ve already ran this dungeon a million times and there’s a warrior in titanforged twink gear abusing some poorly scaled enchants and trinkets one shotting everything with an auto swing so you’re just following behind and they kill the boss before you even round the corner then leave group

The level scaling is a big reason why leveling is such a meme. So stupid to watch a level 15 monk triple your damage with spinning crane kick in single target. Some classes don’t come online until they get the right talent or ability for their character to function how its supposed to and the game doesn’t really tell you that, it just assumes you’ve already played for several expansions and know your way around already. Or you’re sherpa’ing a buddy you convinced to download the game.

New players dont have damage meters, so they don’t care

You don’t need Details, or any prior game knowledge to see how stupid this is.

The leveling experience is so awful it’s kind of impressive.

It really doesn’t matter at this point unless they do a massive overhaul.

can you provide a direction for what one must design in order for it to be fun?

because everyone wants to have fun and be happy, but most people have no idea how to get there.

And yet, people still claim that the leveling process is designed to “sell boosts”.

The current paradigm is to make alting convenient, which it wasn’t in vanilla-wrath. I think there’s merit to having a real leveling experience ala early WoW, but we have to get off the “boosts = ptw reeee” nonsense. If leveling takes 2 weeks each time you want to try a class, boosts are just time saves.

Never underestimate the impatience of WoW players.

I mean, I’d buy boosts if I didn’t have everything I want. I don’t view skipping a queue as cheating if you pay for it. In the 18hr or w/e it would take to level a character (and not have any fun) I would have been able to pay for 9 boosts.

But I do think a robust leveling experience is somewhat required to hook a lot of new players even if it would cost me more in the short term.

Well, actually being able to play my class in a dungeon would be a great start.

How dare you want to engage in a dungeon while leveling instead of following a level 10 tank that can easily solo the dungeon pulling 6-7 packs at a time!

Sounds cool. Is it the reason that on classic era there are more players in boost camps than players leveling in world ?

Even the DF leveling dungeons are full of max level players in raid gear soloing the place.

go on… which changes do you suggest to your class?
