I’ve played WoW for 20 years, since age 14. I’ve played at the highest level, including 6 world first kills but I was much younger then. But what thing I’ve noticed is, the top players in the world aren’t that young.
When you look at rocket League for example, you’re basically retiring at 21-22 years old. Top players are currently under 18. Many of these games, the best players are 18 or younger. I feel like WoW and to some extent LOL both don’t have a super young playerbase.
I’m curious why that is? I rarely run into young kids under 18 in guilds or anywhere there’s VC. Granted I don’t play at the highest level anymore, I did set w record at age 33 by getting every class to 3k+ up in a single season (world first to do that).
So why is WoW not dominated by the younger generation?
Social media, game genre, and communication alternatives
When many of us started playing, WoW was an avenue for socialization that wasnt really common in the internet. Since then, everything has changed and WoW is sort of archaic.
WoW/MMOs are slow and grindy game that doesnt offer the same came of rewards of the other popular games
Too many newer games out there for the younger generations. They just aren’t that interested in playing a 20 year old game that their parents possibly played.
While I have seen a few younger players this game just doesn’t seem to hold their interest for very long.
Whenever you think you’ve seen the best a player is capable of doing mechanically, you have someone like Nush show up and it make you want to quit playing.
WoW top 1% are great but I’ve never thought, “Man, I just can’t see myself ever being that good”
Hey kid, come play this game. You just have to spend 20 hours installing addons, watching guides and setting up weak auras and then it will finally be fun, I swear!!
20 years ago, MMOs were the pinnacle of online gaming. Today they’re just one of many, MANY options, and not even a terribly popular one comparatively.
