Just curious, I have two kids and one of them is a teen and she absolutely loves FF14. That’s like her go to MMO, and there’s a ton of female streamers/content creators in that game and she feels like she has a future in content creation and in that game in general because of seeing idols that she can relate to.
I recently tried to get her into DF and although she was having fun, she found that the stream/youtube/pro scene of this game is mostly male dominated. She has no issue with that ofc, it is what it is but she asked me:
“Dad, do girls not play WoW?”
Which is a hard question to answer because as someone who primarily played Classic I can say without a shadow of a doubt I have not run across a single female gamer during my time there, even on several Discord servers or in-game.
But in Retail, especially with the diversity push I figured there would be more content creators that young woman can look at and relate to.
Do you guys know why it is that women in general aren’t as represented as their male counterparts in the WoW content universe and in-game?
Which realm do you play on for Classic? I am on Atiesh, and tend to be pretty vocal when I pug raids. I’ve also had to get vocal with stupid “hurrdurr she said” type comments once or twice.
Yes, I am a woman.
We’re definitely out there. Most of the time, we just don’t go bouncing around and advertising that fact to people. If I am tanking a dungeon, I don’t enter and say, “OMG HAI GUYZ!!! Now, I am a tank but also a giirrlll, so be nice to me ok? HUGS.” or whatever other nonsense.
I go in. I tank circles around mobs. I say, “gg” at the end of the dungeon. I leave.
No she doesn’t mind playing, she was just curious as to why there aren’t many female streamers/content creators as she comes from FF14 where there are plenty. They’re kids, they want someone who they can relate to.
Ah now I regret bringing my daughter into this game haha. Don’t want her to get harassed just for being herself.
I dunno. I kinda don’t care about my gender, race, or sexuality being represented. I just want to be a male dragon, and the Dracthyr is as close as it gets.
Just to reiterate, it’s my best guess, based on the types of viewers I see in large WoW content creators’ chats. I’m not trying to make any authoritative statements about why.
Women definitely do play, I just don’t know if the average woman playing is actually comfortable letting the average player know they’re a woman, for one reason or another.
It’s part of being a girl gamer, even nowadays. It does good, to grow a thick skin.
I’ve been gaming since the early 80’s, back when Atari’s were the new thing. I’ve been doing this a very long time.
Nowadays, as long as she is firm about her stance (no need to get nasty, unless that’s her vibe), then the idiot types tend to back down quicker nowadays. You don’t seen it nearly as much as say back during og Wrath.
Huh it’s so weird seeing the differences between MMOs, people on FF14 def don’t seem to have a problem. She’s made tons of friends over there, and she never felt harassed but it’s strange that people might feel odd just sharing a basic info like their gender about themselves.
