I was excited before 8.1.5 came out as it seemed like each profession was getting something really useful and exciting. I did the initial quest for tailoring when it came out and then did the quests and crafted the Ub3r Spanner (Engineering ToT) but it has been a huge disappointment since. I’ve only crafted the engineering tool and stopped at that since all the others seem equally underwhelming (except for maybe Alchemy, and that one seems like it has diminished usefulness now with the new tier of craftables). It seemed fun when initially I tested it on a target dummy. The damage wasn’t anything extraordinary, but it gave an extra unique button to push which had potential for fun.
Then I found out that Ub3r Spanner can’t be used in mythic dungeons or raids at all, which is where it could really shine as a way to customize your character and bring something unique/fun outside of class abilities. I believe it is also restricted in battlegrounds and arena. Some other professions’ ToT benefits can be used within these restricted activities, others can’t. Isn’t this where you would most likely want to use your hard-earned crafted items? I understand the PvP aspect of the game is a nightmare to balance and many profession items/consumables are restricted, but I can’t understand why mythic dungeons and raids would be restricted.
Additionally, the craftable Ub3r modules are classed as Unique and Soulbound, so you can only have one of each module on you. So if you’re making more to skill up, trash it and then make another? And then you don’t have them to use later. Also, the buff will disappear if you die so you also don’t have another module to refresh it. If there is a concern about abuse by frequently changing your Spanner mode every pull to take advantage of some benefit, then put a shared cooldown across the modules so that you have to make that choice for the duration and make the buff persist through death. Another option is to make them a stackable consumable that activates the spanner a with the specific invention and share a cooldown timer with the other modules and the Ub3r spanner.
Right now, the design feels horribly lacking and I’m stuck between the slim hope that the Ub3r Spanner gets a rework to address these issues and just trashing the modules so I can level the tradeskill and make the new goggles/ATV mount. There’s so much potential for it to be fun, but it’s really missed the mark.
