I’m sure everyone on here is very aware at how atrocious the matchmaking system is in RBGs. Just last night, my team who averaged around 1700 (with a 1989 mmr for some reason) faced a team with everyone above 2200, except 1 1700 player, giving them a mmr of 1970ish for some reason.
We of course got steam rolled just minutes into the game and lost. Is there a reason behind how this matchmaking system works?
Why isn’t it based on the average rating of each player? Can someone share Blizzard quotes giving their explanation?

If your team was on average 1700cr, you were on a win streak. System working as intended. You can’t climb without beating better teams.

WoW ratings are freaking punishing. It’s the opposite of most games. A win gets you a step ahead but a loss gets you a leap backwards.

No it doesn’t lmao. If your mmr isn’t absolute dog water you will always win more than you lose. It’s really weird to have 0 rated achieves in any bracket, then speak on a system you do not encounter. How would you know without actually playing??

I was not on a win streak. I won 1 game then got steam rolled the next.
The average actual rating was 1700ish, some of us were actually below 1500. But our MMR was well above 1900.
This doesn’t make any sense to me.
The only way to gain rating is to play at a higher mmr than your cr. You’re far more fortunate than most of this forum. They tend to play at mmrs below their cr then complain.

I think my only advantage is that I play with guildies and not randoms. I have noticed a lot of people complaining about RBGs playing in randoms, which sounds cancerous to me.
What you’re saying is I am fortunate to be where I am in an unfortunate system. I just want to know why the system is so unfortunate.

Admittedly I haven’t jumped into rated PvP in Shadowlands on any of my toons. But it hasn’t changed much since previous expansions and I have eyes. Go to reddit, go to the Arena forums, go to these forums. I haven’t said anything unpopular. There’s a reason why people sprint into Glad and then stop playing.
You can’t climb without beating better teams that also outgear you. You forgot that part.
And really that would be fine, without the gear part. Go on a win streak, get matched against a higher team to see if you belong there yet. That’s good.
What am I doing wrong then? I can’t seem to find any wins. It’s just loss after loss lately. Either someone drops or we get put up against a team that just crushes us. Git gud I guess.
Fading is correct. You were matched high because you, or others on your team are performing at well above your current ratings, so you got matched with 2200 players who’ve been losing some. It’s actually a really complimenting system, because so long as you’re playing above your CR you lose less for a loss than you gain for a win. If it was just flat points, or everyone playing against their CR, most people would not be as high of a rating as they are (myself included).

I think its too easy for nine 2200+ players to play with one 1700 CR player and crush 1900 teams. Imo that’s more what the OP is talking about. Not that his team got matched high, but that the obvious carry team got matched so low. The carry team should still be 2100+ mmr. Would put too many carriers out of business but thats a good thing

That team likely purposesly lost games to decrease mmr and that’s been happening since the inception of the bracket and it actually does more good than harm. The 3-4 teams they gave free points too, lowered hero by a nominal amount and will in turn increase participation. It’s just how it is. It was like queueing into wintraders in MoP who managed to mess up their match making exploit to queue into each other.

or its just that the carry player is dragging them down to 1900 because the system isnt designed properly.

I don’t think one 1700 player will tank mmr that much. We frequently queue 2300 alts with a handful of 1800-2k cr friends alts, and the lowest we typically queue is like 2150-2200.

Winstreaks haven’t been a thing for a while. But it does sound like his team beat a better team to begin with or that other people on his team have personal MMR from doing so.
Because 7 people with 2200 isn’t enough to off set the other 3 with 1700 or even less to avoid queuing into 1800-2000 teams.
If you’re in a guild group (I think it’s 7 or 8 at least to be marked for the guild reward) you do receive increased MMR.
People aren’t boosting 1 person at a time though. It ranges from 3-5.

with one detail. That you loss cr for lossing games. This system is toxic
This is new to me and makes complete sense. I think this should be removed completely.
Can you cite this? I’ve never heard this.
This is one of the main issues currently imo. 1400, 1600, and 1800 all feel like pretty big hurdles to cross once to get just below them because of it, but once you get above them and get your gear, it feels significantly easier.
